CZ 527 17 REM (( WHY SO UNPOPULAR ))
« on: July 16, 2012, 01:05:17 PM »
My SON and I have a CZ 527 17 REM  VARMINTER  and are really quite impressed with the rifle. We have not experinced  any of the problems that people swear plague this Rifle Caliber . We have had this rifle for several years, and the more we shoot  this rifle the more we like it. Why is the 17 REM so unpopular, what is it that my Son and I can`t see that makes the rifle so. We shoot 20 & 25 gr V-MAX`S with H4895, and get 1/2 inch groups most of time. I can`t get over being able to spot for your self and see the bullet hit. Is CZ even making a 527 17 REM  any more. If we find one in good shape that we can afford, we will have two of them.  THANKS IN ADVANCE:   ken

the smaller centerfire calibers .17 .218, .221 ect i have found to be usually owned by those who have specific use for it, and a large number of those tend to go the whole hog and get a custom build, ive never fired the cz 17 but have shot those built on a rem 700 action. the introduction of the .17 HMR another cracking little round may also have had an effect on the .17 sales figures.   my next purchase i think will be the new .17 hornet it looks like it will be a real winner.

It is good that you seem to have an ideal barrel in your .17 Rem. but it is the average performance and fouling characteristics that count in the marketplace. Shooters whom I know have found that that they just have to clean it too often for productive pest shooting. Ackley wrote  to the effect that: anything bigger than the 17 Ackley Hornet was overbore. The new Ruger is basically a .17 Ackley Hornet and if it gives the average shooter several dozen good shots between cleaning, it  will dominate the market.
A good shot at close range beats a 'hit' at a longer range.
