Anyone experiencing sticky mag release?
« on: June 25, 2012, 03:15:48 PM »
My mag release was almost frozen shut this morning, took two thumbs to get it to pop. No visual rust, no debris, oiled the heck out of it and it works again, but with a VERY noticeable "catch" at the end of the stroke, and a hesitation to "let go" back into position. During a stress mag change that could be "bad", with the new mag falling out before the catch returns to keep it in place. This is the Phantom poly frame, BTW. Fantastic pistol, just got night sights put on.

i had that happen on i belive my witness 45.  i think i traced it to the mag catch slot in the mag.  it was just barely large enough to allow the catch to slide in and once in, it was stuck.  didnt keep that mag around too long after that.

I would "thoroughly" clean the mag release.  I don't how yours compares to my 75B, but if hard crud or something else got on the bar, it could stick intermittently.

You've been shooting yours for some time, but bang bang makes a good point.  Possibly it's the mag.   if you haven't been using all of them regularly,  it might just be showing up.

I had this same issue, my was resolved with a new SS Magazine Brake Stainless.
its a cheap upgrade that works, the stock one is slightly thin, if you slam a mag in you can bind it just a touch.
This caused mine to have just the slightest hang up with empty mags.

I noticed similar results in my Shadow, and had to 'optimize' the location of mag release spring. Worked flawlessly ever after.

Do check that the mag release spring in centered, or optimized. If it was somehow off-centre, (or more towards left  or even far right in some cases, when looking from top in to the magwell area, it could require a bit more of oomph to release the mags.

My Phantom had that problem when new.  Daily oil and about 5 minutes/day exercising it over a week fixed it, works smoothly now...
