Tabbed bolt carrier but failed the "test"-update
« on: September 08, 2012, 08:57:55 AM »
My VZ2008 runs fine shooting normal, but off the bench fired very slowly the striker would follow the bolt. The bolt carrier didn't have the tab welded in place, so I machined one to weld on. I made it .100" thick per OB1bonjovi and made it long enough so it was about 1/16" back from the mag well opening so it didn't hit the mag. From the back of the bolt carrier where the striker hits to the front of the tab is .925"., I can only make it about a 1/16" (.060") longer before sticking out past the magwell. It looks like all the other tabbed bolts I've seen in pictures and better than some. I tack welded it in to test out before running a bead. I did the OB1 "test" and pulled the bolt back, then pulled and held the trigger, then let the bolt go sending it forward. The striker followed and did not catch. Now I haven't fired it yet, so it may be a non issue but what do you think is going on ? Can some of you post some pics of yours and maybe some measurments ? -Thanks

there are a couple reasons you could fail the test, either the tab is not long/high enough to contact disconnector before striker crosses sear, or a new one I have discovered, possibly your sear is sticky, or has too little spring pressure and does not return fast enough.  To check just the tab, remove receiver cover and do the same test, but in slo-mo with your hand, without the receiver cover off you will be able to see the  sear pop up when carrier hits disconnector, it should be before the striker corsses the sear.

I think I need to make the tab just a bit longer so the end is perfectly flush with the magwell. The striker will catch when I work it by hand with the cover off and even when I work it really fast with the cover on. I think it's just missing the sear by a fraction of a second when I let the bolt fly. So I think that extra 1/16" on the tab will eliminate the problem. In the process of making a new longer tab, will report back this weekend. -Thanks

Got it now. The extra length (.040"-.060") made the difference. It now passes the test.
