What to do?
« on: October 02, 2012, 12:59:56 PM »
i've had my P-01 for a while now.  i love the thing.  i have been through an OCEAN of handguns.  most of my jobs involved one and i've bought more than my share on my own. i had finally found the perfect pistol - a Sig P250.  it was "just right".  it fit my hand, i shot it perfect, it carried nice, everything about the gun was exactly what i had always wanted in a gun...... then i gave it to my wife :( it took me a while (and a few purchases) to finally settle on my current P-01.  i REALLY like this gun.  there are just a couple things i need to fix on it.  (1) the sights.  they suck.  there's really no nice way to put it.  great gun, garbage sights.  i think i am going to go with some 24/7's so, i really have no questions there. (2) the DA trigger is murder.  dear God, this thing takes two men and a boy to pull.  now i know about Cajun Gun Works, but i'm not looking for 2-3 hundred dollars worth the trigger work.  i just wanna know what i can replace to make the DA a little lighter or a little smoother and what risk i run of getting light strikes on my first (and most crucial) shot because this is a carry piece.  whatever y'all can suggest, as far as making my DA trigger pull nicer, would be greatly appreciated (especially if it is something cheap i can do myself)

Thanks

CZ Custom and Cajun both sell trigger kits and hammer kits for the DIY.

May I ask, why are you shooting DA anyway? The P-01 has a decocker. The trigger is easier to pull when in decock mode. Not as easy as SA but easier than DA.

BTW - the trigger will get better the more you use it. Either shoot it more often or just dry fire it a few hundred times while watching TV.

The Cajun Gun Works trigger kits are very reasonable as long as you can do the installation.  They offer a couple of options that are less than $100.  I am going to order one for my compact.  The most obvious solution to the long DA is to carry at half-cock.  That reduces the DA pull quite a bit.

Agree with you that the sights suck...couldn't see a thing with them, so I upgraded to a set of Meprolight Tru-Dot Night Sights (ML-17775), made specifically for the P-01.

As far as the trigger goes...it does get better.  Got myself some snap caps and worked it a few hundred times while watching TV.  It's still a pretty long pull, SA is a dream but that DA feels like a log but it serves it's purpose and it's still my preference to have that along with a decocker rather than a safety.

Installing a lighter hammer/main spring and an extended firing pin will go a long ways towards reducing the DA pull.   Going with his extended firing pin will let you go a bit lighter on the spring and while still ensuring reliable primer strikes.  Carrying in half-cock is also a good suggestion.  If you're adventurous and have a day/weekend to kill, breaking it down and polishing all the contact surfaces will help to smooth and lighten the pull even more.  The decockers can be a PITA to reassemble though, especially if it's your first time doing it.  If you're looking for a crisper break, investigate a CGW hammer kit.

Personally, I'd recommend giving David at CGW a call and discuss options.  Let him know this is a carry piece and what you're looking to spend, and get his advice on what spring weight to use.

As for sights, they're pretty easy to change.  The real "challenge" there is figuring out what replacement sights you want to use, as there are lots of options.

oh my bad, i guess i used the wrong term when i said DA.  i AM firing from the half cocked position and i'm still not happy with it.  if y'all had ever shot my old P250 you'd see why LOL.

so.... the DIY kit, what all does it include?  or rather what should i be replacing?

i REALLY like this gun.  there are just a couple things i need to fix on it.  (1) the sights.  they suck.   I hate three dot sights on any gun.  I like to leave the front sight factory and paint it orange and install a CZCustom Competition or Tactical rear sight.there's really no nice way to put it.  great gun, garbage sights.  i think i am going to go with some 24/7's so, i really have no questions there. (2) the DA trigger is murder.  dear God, this thing takes two men and a boy to pull.  now i know about Cajun Gun Works, but i'm not looking for 2-3 hundred dollars worth the trigger work.  i just wanna know what i can replace to make the DA a little lighter or a little smoother and what risk i run of getting light strikes The typical consensus is that going below a 13 pound mainspring REQUIRES an extended firing pin due to light strikes.  I experienced some light strikes with CCI 500 primers and a 13 pound spring.on my first (and most crucial) shot because this is a carry piece.  whatever y'all can suggest, as far as making my DA trigger pull nicer, would be greatly appreciated (especially if it is something cheap i can do myself)

Thanks

For a carry piece, wanting a lighter (but more importantly SMOOTHER trigger) this is what I would do:

1. Shoot it around 300 rounds.  This will give you some nice wear marks for when you go to polish the internals. (Cost: $ammo)
2. Remove the mainspring and cut up to one coil off.  You can go 1/4 to 1/2 coil at a time if you want.  This will lighten the pull but should still keep out out of the danger zone.  Don't go more than one coil total!!!(Cost: $0)
3. Install either CGW or CZCustom extended firing pin.  This will be a little extra insurance for reliability, and (for ME) an absolute necessity in a carry piece. (Cost: $25 includes a new spring)
4. Take the gun apart and polish all surfaces that show a little "wear" from shooting the "break-in period."  Don't change angles...keep everything smooth and flat.  Don't forget that you aren't removing material...you only want to POLISH it. (Cost: $time)

That is about as cheap as you can go without replacing major parts.  Honestly, if you want to dramatically improve the trigger pull, install either the CZCustom Competition Hammer or CGW Race Hammer (Schmecky makes a model specifically for carry).  It will require fitting of the sear for the safety to work OR installing an adjustable sear.  COMPLETELY worth it.

Here's a GREAT polishing guide, courtesy of Schmecky (owner of Cajun Gun Works)
