best hunting bullet for my .308 550 FS
« on: February 24, 2013, 06:46:28 AM »
I know I'm months away from deer season but I want to start looking for bullets and head to the range. My brother gave me a few federal match king boat tail bullets last year to use but I never pulled the trigger.  So with all the ammo shortage going on I want to start looking for the best load for Ga. Whitetail
CZ-75 polished stainless
CZ-75 compact 9mm
CZ-82 x 2, 9x18 Makarov
CZ-550 FS  308 cal
CZ 452 Trainer 22 LR
Ruger .22SR
Ruger Mark lll
REM 700  MTN rifle 7mm 08
H&R .20 gauge slug gun/thumb-hole stock

IMHO, the best bullet for deer hunting is the Sierra Gameking or Prohunter.  I've come to really like the 165 grain bullet in .30 cals.

thru the nearly 50 yrs of whitetail hunting in wisconsin i have reloaded several bullet weights for my 30-06 700 remington. the lightest was 150 grain and the heaviest being 220 grain. the 220's were loaded after i shot a deer one year and it ran off and i never found it.i was young and thought loading a bigger bullet would prevent that from ever happening again. never used many of the 220 gr even after loading up 100 of them and ended up giving them away last year with all the reloading equipment i sold. based on my experiences thru the years i would load 150 grain speer point bullets for any open range shooting of deer and 165 grain bullets for brush and woods hunting where shots are usually 100 yds or less.i hunt in state forest where most of my shots are 50 yds or less. i still have 150 30-06 rounds loaded that will last me till my hunting is finally done. they are 165 grain speer bullets #2035,cci 200 large rifle primers, 55 grains of imr 4350 powder, with a muzzle velosity of 2700 fps. without any more information than you have provided i would recommend 150-165 grain bullets in whatever name brand mfg of your choosing.there is no need to have any exotic tips or bullet configurations just a good ,sound, reliable round. one consideration is to decide on a brand or combination that will be available in your area in the future when you need to buy more.

You might be better off with a soft point for hunting.

I agree.  The Sierra Matchking isn't designed for hunting.  It may or may not open up on game.

This would be my choice.

I hunt with 165gr Hornady SST Superperformance in my .308 Tikka T3. My 10pt last season made it all of 8ft after I shot it.

+ 1 !  I use 165 grain Bullets in both the .30/06 and .308.
