Home storage pistol vault or locker
« on: October 31, 2020, 03:04:40 PM »
I’m looking for a small, minimal 4 pistol vault or storage locker that doesn’t take up much room & is affordable.  I want it to lock but the kids are grown & out of the house now so simple is fine. I can store my ammo & other things elsewhere.  Can anyone recommend something?  Seems most of what I see is way overkill.  Thanks!

I looked at this several years ago. Here's what I found... All these pistol safes have one BIG disadvantage... they are portable. So if someone wants your pistol, all they have to do is pry it up off the floor and take the safe home where they can open it at their leisure. So while these containers will certainly stop your child, they will not stop the druggie down the street who only wants to pawn your gun, or worse yet... shoot a LEO.

The safer thing is a disguised hiding place. A hollowed out book. A hollow mantle piece, with a small door on one end. Or my favorite... a fake electrical panel in the bedroom closet or laundry room. Breaker panels are so innocuous no one pays them any attention. All of these are also 1/10th the cost of a digital handgun safe.

And too, every house in America has a void somewhere inside a wall where plumbing and/or electrical run from the basement up to the roof. Use your knowledge of your home to outsmart your opponent.

Most Pistol Vaults hold (maybe) two full sized Pistols
Then you jump to larger than four
Something like this can be used, it's DOJ approved and can be bolted to something much larger, less portable

So tell me again how Trump was worse then the 8 years before .... AND what's coming after HIM !

Going to really depend on what your definition of "affordable" is. For small, handgun safes, I really like Vaultek.

I have a couple of their safes, a single handgun safe on my desk and a single handgun slider in the bedroom.

My kids are older, but I do have grandkids. Vaultek has an app for these safes that alerts you to tampering with certain models.

They give me some peace of mind to know that my handguns are accessible, but the little ones can't get hold of them.

They do make a safe that can hold 6 handguns with room to spare.

The price ranges from $400 to $500 based on what options you choose.

Thanks for the ideas everyone.  I'll check out Vaultek.  And Wobbly - great insight.  I have a large crawlspace under the house.  It would be nice to be able to have something built into the floor, that perhaps could pop up like an elevator somehow.  I'll have to look into this more.

A floor mounted furnace vent... that isn't.

My friend has an old Coke machine with all the guts removed setting in his basement family room next to an old jukebox. He has kept his long guns locked in that Coke machine for years and no one has noticed.

My agency issued us these https://www.hornady.com/security/rapid-safes/2600kp-2700kp#!/ and I put a giant eye bolt into the stud behind the bed to attach the cable to it, but it can be bolted to the wall directly as well.   I just keep my duty gun, badge, and mags in there (tight fit with a full size glock) when Im home or if im just taking a quick trip out as I almost always am carrying if leave the house.  This one holds two guns and may be better for you https://www.hornady.com/security/rapid-safes/4800kp#!/
I want an AR compatible version of https://www.hornady.com/security/rapid-safes/shotgun-wall-lock#!/ to keep one in the closet, but for anti-theft purposes everything outside of my duty pistol is in the safe.

Regarding vaultek above.  My last job issued us the lifepod by vaultek for travel but I really dont use it or trust it.  Its super flimsy compared to the hornady and has less space.  its size is conducive to fitting nicely in your luggage but i feel like i could break into it quickly with basic tools.  Maybe that one in the video is sturdier, but i have my doubts as it appears to focus on features over heft.

Kind of on the same subject, I have been using metal gun cabinets since we built the house. A extra bedroom closet shelving was custom built for the cabinets to fit in. Problem is the cabinets are key-locked. They each came with two. One cabinet, I lost the extra key and the other the extra key bent and would likely break if i straightened it. The company doesnt respond when I ask about obtaining replacement keys, and is now requiring that the cabinets be registered to them with information that I dont have, such as where bought and when. So Ive decided to go with cabinets/safes that use combinations instead of keys. The problem is going to be getting one the same size or close, most safes tend to be deeper by quite a bit.

So Ive got a major search ahead of me I think.

I really like the idea of the old Coke machine. It doesn't scream "guns in here"

Yeah..but I'd get real disappointed if there wasn't a coke in there.  :-[
