Waiting for my 527 - Need Scope Suggestions
« on: February 17, 2013, 07:05:35 AM »
Hi All:
I have a 527 Carbine in .223 on the way - my first center fire rifle.  :)
Looking to add a scope for range use mainly but would also use for varmint.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

its a question of how much you want to spend.  personaly id fit a 3x9x40 on the little carbine, a  leopy vx11 would be my choice, or possibily a redfield. afew guys on this forum have gone with nikons and weavers. you say it will be mainly range work so you might want a model with target turrets, but there again i think it would look out of place on the carbine.

What price range?

I would get this,

http://swfa.com/Nikon-1-4x20-M223-Riflescope-P61432.aspx

Nikon 1-4 with BDC. Have it on an AR = goodness.

More power,

http://swfa.com/Nikon-4-12x40-P223-Riflescope-P61434.aspx
OR
http://swfa.com/Nikon-4-12x40-ProStaff-Riflescope-P48760.aspx

Nikon sells better, more expensive, scopes but even their entry levels are very good. Buddy is right, you don't really need the adjustable turrets they will clutter up the lines of the rifle. With the BDC AND 223 ballistics I never use mine. I am looking for for hits in an area not dotting an I.

Since I was considering two (One for 452 & one for new 527) I was hoping to stay in the $200 range.
Any feedback on Mueller or Sightron?

If I had a $400 budget: $100 for the 452 and $300 for the 527.

The 452 won't have the recoil and you won't be shooting much past 150 yards so you can sacrifice some clarity. I have a Centerpoint on a silhouette that works great out to 100. I don't fool with the turrets and I don't max the power. So far maybe 1,000 rounds and all is good. When it breaks, and it will, I'll spend some money on a much better scope, but so far.....

The 527 will have more recoil and you need to depend on it doing a job so ...  You also will be shooting at longer ranges and good glass = clarity. It is not all about top end magnification.

Never used the ones you mentioned but I am a big fan of Nikon, Leopold, and Burris. I just picked up a used 3-9 Burris w BDC for $60 and will be using that on a new yote AR assembly so shop around, bargains are out there. Passed on a Nikon buck master 4-16-40 with side focus for $200, should have got it for the silhouette, but didn't think about it.

Great points - thanks.
I will look for a BDC for the 527 and hold on one for the 452 (Like iron sights anyway)

Mt 452 .22 long rifle wears and old bausch and lomb elite 2-7 X 32 (I believe, it is definitely less than 40) and my 527 .223 wears a vortex 5-15X44  mil-mil with side focus AO and tactical knobs.

My 527 in .22 Hornet wears a Zeiss Conquest (cheaper, USA assembled) 2.5-8x32mm. All I need for a 200 yard max varmint gun.

The 527 in 7.62x39 has a no name cheap Chinese 4x32mm because it was in a drawer when the rifle arrived... It doesn't need more as I'm not going to use it past 100 yards or on tiny critters. When it breaks or spare cash is plentiful it might get a Redfield similar to the Zeiss on the other rifle. Or maybe a 1-4x20 with an illuminated reticle if I'm feeling fancy and the price is good.

The 452 Ultra Lux has an aftermarket Tech sight. With 34" of sighting plain, it's good as far as I can see and estimate bullet drop. Everyone should have at least one accurate iron sighted .22!

The zeiss conquests are absolutely fantastic scopes.  They have wonderful clarity and contrast.  I have several of them on my big game rifles.

Great info - very helpful.
Has anyone heard of Hawke Optics out to Great Briton? Looks like decent products with good reviews for the price.
Let me know thoughts.
Thanks,

I put a redfield 6-18x44 on my 453 .17 hmr. Its big but I will be able to really reach out with it.
The 527 lux is naked at the moment.
452 trainer wears a $30.00 simmons and I can group 10 shots with it in a quarter size target with no effort at 50 yards.
The 527 carbine in 7.62x39 wears a used leupold 2-7x33mm. Its a perfect fit for the rifle.

I bought my Trainer cause I could not find the UL. Love the sights on the Trainer! Really torn if i want to put the scope on it.

My 527 (.204 Ruger) wears a Vortex Viper.  I've been thoroughly pleased with the scope.  For optical clarity it beats my Nikon hands down and I couldn't tell a bit of difference between it and a Leupold.  The warranty is great.  The relief is great. The ease of use is great.

When the time comes that I need another scope, I know what I'll be buying.  The Vortex scopes fit my needs and budget perfectly.

Just my 2 cents,
Andrew
