Top Loading CZ 550 in .308 (Detachable Mag)
« on: January 28, 2013, 11:42:35 PM »
I apologize for making a new thread if this question has been answered before, but I searched around for some time and couldn't find anything here, nor could I find this question answered in any reviews.

Specifically, I need to know if you can top-load the 550's that have detachable magazines.  I have "heard" you can't, but I wanted to make certain, as this is a feature I would like to have in a rifle.  Some of the complaints I've heard regarding the 550 is the tendency of the detachable mag to have a little trouble seating, and it's just something I feel would be omitted by top loading.

Let me know, as this is really important to me in buying or not buying a 550.  Already have a 455 and it's great.  Thanks!

According to the owners manual single rounds can be loaded... https://czusamedia.s3.amazonaws.com/product_downloads/CZ_550.pdf

Note:
Loading is also possible for single cartridges by directly inserting into the chamber without the use of a magazine.
I had the right to remain silent...

but not the ability.

they cant be top loaded like say a rem 700 with a floor plate, where each round is simply pushed down behind the other from the ejection port, as someone else said you can roll one round in on top of the mag and force the ejection claw over the rear of the round when chambering it , personally i would never do this, in cace of bowing (damaging)the ejector claw.  there is no real problem with the mag seating unless the action is not  fitted correctly in the stock which can have the knock on effect that the mag housing is not exactly mated to the bottom of the action so when chambering a round the bolt can sometimes skip over it.      having had   both cz & rem700 in .308 id pick the det mag in fact on my current remmy ive fitted new bottom metal to use the a.i. mags.

I appreciate the replies.

Going to have to really think about it if I'm going to commit to the detachable mag.  Being able to top load without having to jimmy with getting a mag out is something that appeals to me, but it could be overlooked since the 550 is such a good model.

I know this is for a rimfire.....

But, you might be able to modify a mag to make something like this work, or maybe check with the Lowery guy and see if he is able to do something for the 550.

Hi. I don't know if this will help or not.

I find the 4 round detachable magazine to be of very high quality, but relatively time consuming to load. However, the insertion and extraction of these magazines is definitely not a struggle. They go in readily and simply fall out when you push the mag release button in the trigger guard.

There are plusses and minuses to the CZ detachable magazine. Among the plusses is that it ejects very easily with a push forward with the back of the last knuckle of the trigger finger, and it pops right out in your hand. It is a single feed, double stack magazine, rather than a dual feed double stack. The round feeds straight out of the magazine and right into the chamber. It is really very smooth. Downside to this magazine is it must be removed from the action to be loaded with cartridges, and to load them you press one in and slide it back under the lips, press the first cartridge down and slide the second one in from front to rear between the lips, and so on until it is loaded. This is a minus to me.

Other plusses include that you can readily carry another loaded magazine and if for some unknown reason you miss your quarry with the first 4 or 5 shots, you can quickly insert your back up mag, or if you like, you can carry two different types of ammunition, like a 100 grain bonded bullet in 243 for deer, and a 60 grainer for coyotes. Also, the CZ 750 10 round magazines will readily fit in the rifle, and these are sweet magazines. I have two of them and these are some well built magazines, and while it is hard to justify it, they are worth the $120+ that CZUSA sells them for.

Whichever way you go with your purchase, I hope you enjoy your new rifle.
