Hunting Rifle in 7x57 Mauser
« on: May 02, 2013, 05:19:23 AM »
I get more and more interested in the 7mm Mauser everyday and would love to find a rifle chambered for the round.

So far, the only rifle I've been able to find is a Ruger #1. It's not a bad gun, but I would prefer a bolt action and something that would be able to hold multiple rounds.

There was a similar thread to this one posted about 11 years ago, but most of the rifles mentioned are no longer in production. If anyone knows anything about this round or companies that still make rifles chambered for it, please let me know!

Oh, and I should probably mention it would primarily be a hunting rifle, so I'd rather avoid the older Mauser rifles, despite how great they may be. I'd hate to destroy one with too hot of a load.

Not sure who's chambering it new anymore.  I love that Cartridge, too, and have two converted Surplus Mausers in that Caliber.  One, a Custom 98 Mauser in a Fajen Stock with a Shilen Barrel and the other a German 95 Chilean "Scout" Rifle Conversion.

Were I in the Market for another 7x57mm Mauser, I would look for a used, but excellent condition, Interarms Mauser or Cz.

Thanks. Yeah, I decided to look for a gently used CZ 550 American chambered for the cartridge. There's a pretty good looking one on Gun Broker that I'm seriously considering.

I am not aware of any new rifles offered in 7x57.  If you are set in that caliber I would definitely jump on a CZ 550 if you can find one.  I have a Brno Zh-104 that is 7x57Rimmed over 12 gauge that I acquired while overseas in Germany.  It is a fine rifle and I took a Red Deer with it that is proudly mounted in my den.  I have a CZ 550 in 243 and I really like the rifle.  It is a sharp looking rifle and has outstanding ergonomics-really comes to the shoulder well for me.

7x57 is still available from German (and probably Austrian) gunmakers but it cannot be used in some EU countries due to its military origin.
A good shot at close range beats a 'hit' at a longer range.

Ran across this in another thread.  If you can save your $$ for a Model 70 Featherweight, it's a good deal! Besides, if there is enough commercial demand, then perhaps others will again chamber Rifles in 7.x57mm.

Even Winchester is offering the new Model 70 Featherweight in 7x57mm Mauser. A cartridge that just about all other US manufacturers has forgotten. I know, factory ammo sucks in the USA for 7x57mm Mauser, but I don't shoot factory ammo except for brass.
