My two cents.  It is easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission.  If you are so insecure at work you can carry, but if you get caught you can plead ignorance and say you had it on when you ran an errand this morning and were such a hurry to get to work you forgot you had it on.  Then maybe you you can beg forgiveness and still keep your job.  You have to do a risk/reward analysis.  If you try to change policy you bring attention to yourself.  My thought is you will be more closely scrutinized.  I don't feel this is the place or forum (at work) for politics to come out.

My guess is more lifetime is lost due to poverty than to violence.  Under the current dysfunctional economy and leadership I wouldn't jeopardize a job by violating employer policy without a backup career at the ready.
