Zastava M57 - at LGS, worth $290?
« on: July 17, 2013, 02:05:00 PM »
Gentlefolk;

Was browsing at an LGS and saw the Zastava M 57 chambered in 7.62x25 for $290. NIB, spare mag, box.

Know NOTHING about Zastava, but I am in a bit of a ComBloc mode now, since I got my CZ52, which I have yet to fire.

Is Zastava the next sleeper weapon to be discovered? Or ComBloc peasant weaponry?

Thx!

Zastava is a company in Serbia (once known as Yugoslavia). They recently started producing new clones of the original Soviet TT-33 in 7.62x25 and 9mm. I have no personal experience with them, but wouldn't mind owning one in 7.62x25. I have seen them online for around $250 - $260. If you order online you may have to pay shipping and you would definitely have to pay a transfer fee so I think $290 at an LGS sounds like a fair price.

Overall a good gun, but check it out in person before you accept it.
I have one in 9mm rather than the original 7.62x25.  7.62x25 is a fine round, but the ammo is harder to come by these days and I have a ton of 9mm already available, I am used to it, etc.

Mine did come with a problem, though - the front sight post was positioned way off centerline and stuck in its dovetail, not easy to adjust to the correct centerline position.  It needs a trip to the gunsmith before it is a finished pistol.  Your mileage may vary, but a careful visual inspection before you accept deliver is something I'd advise.

In every other way it is a bargain.  Reliable, accurate, comfortable to shoot and in the hand, nice looking, etc.  They are a bit harder to take apart for cleaning than modern CZs, Sigs, etc.  But not absurdly so.  Only other drawback compared to a modern western semiauto is the single stack mags mean somewhat lower capacity.

Thanks, Jason!

Is your Zastava new mfg or milsurp?

I have read with the milsurp, the added safety causes issues.

Any thoughts on that?

Thx!
