Rifle Decapping Pin Sticking?
« on: August 06, 2013, 07:57:59 PM »
Picked up a 223 recently.  Have been collecting range brass for awhile, little bit of everything.  Resized, swagged everything and primed about 275.  Been to the range twice and shot about 150 rounds.  Picked up everything to do it all over again minus swagging.

I started tonight.  I'm using Hornady dies, lubing the cases.  Case goes in the die easily, primer falls out.  Then when removing the case from the die it comes out smooth until it's time for the decapping pin and I'm assuming neck resizer to come out.  Well it don't wanna.  I have to crank on the handle to get it to come out and it has that metal squealing noise.  Didn't have the problem first go round.

I have take the die apart and cleaned and inspected everything.  Put a little lube on the neck resizer( or what ever it is called) just because I could and it works great for 3 or 4 rounds and then back to the problem and I know that is not necessary.

Brass was tumbled in corn and walnut mixture with a little car was thrown in.

Ideas??

My 308 dies do this too - friction from the expander.

I use graphite powder as an internal case lubricant to prevent this happening. You can either dip a brush into the graphite and then the brush into the case neck (before running though the sizing die), or a quicker method is to have a small tin of graphite that you can dip the case neck into - this will cover the inside and outside of the case neck (don't really need it on the outside, but no harm done - just goes black). Note that you lube the case first as per normal, then dip in the graphite for the neck lubrication.

I dust a pipe cleaner with powdered white graphite and run it inside the neck. No squeaking. Takes very little to prevent it.

It's difficult to tumble clean the inside of a case as it fills up and the media movement ceases. I also have some cake decorating icing nipple cleaning brushes (don't ask) that look like a small nylon brush on one end and nylon bottle brush on the other. Works great at cleaning the necks. The wife gets tehm where cake decorating items are sold.

This is what I use:

Graphite and motor mica will not contaminate your powder.
