vz rail system question
« on: February 02, 2014, 09:54:12 PM »
Is there a rail system for the vz 58 that isnt polymer and is significantly less than 300 dollars?
I ask because as ive read the polymer ones arent ideal for optics.
So basically im looking for a cheap rail system i can expect will get along with long range optics

The Bonesteel and Northeast Arms rails have similar top covers intended to allow co-witnessing w/ iron sights.  I prefer the slimmer profile of the NEA lower rail over the Bonesteel one, but if needing full rails, you should really go w/ the bonesteel ones as the rail mounting blocks vent holes on the NEA...

All others that I'm aware of do not allow this co-witnessing.

However, with forward mount scopes/red dots and the 7.62x39 round, I really doubt that any polymer instability will have any noticeable affect on your shooting precision.

The only major ding I've heard about the FAB is that if you enjoy rapid shooting the polymer can melt...

That said, if you're looking for a precision scope mount, I'd personally lean towards a more typical rear scope setup, the railed dustcover is probably the best option: http://www.vz58rifle.com/products/duralovy-kryt-zaveru-sa-vz-58-dostupne-v-cervenci/
With the receiver side mount scope attachment being the second best option.

Here's the cheapest metal rail that I've seen: http://centerfiresystems.com/hdg-vz58.aspx

The BC Tactical Rail system also looks interesting and they have a scout scope mount that replaces your rear iron sight for  a scope moutn (just don't let your scope cover your ejection port or you'll ruin it!). http://www.bctactical.ca/products.html

Anyone have an idea what the total cost would be for the dust cover from the Czech company?

Corwin Arms has them for $200ish US: http://www.corwin-arms.com/product/cz-858vz-58-dust-cover-scope-mount-0

Don't think it's an exact match to vz58rifle.com, but pretty close.

And no, I don't work for/have or gain any benefit from Corwin other than they have a unique product selection that makes me happy.  :-[

The RS regulate setup even with paying someone to install the rail(which probably isn't necessary, but may be good for peace of mind) would come up less and preserve a more neutral balance point as well as open you up to more optic options, ie lo magnification sights like ACOGs as well as red dots.

Full disclosure: I do not have one of these as I built my rifle up before they came out but appreciate what they bring to the market----> versatility.

I think there's some fitting required for the more expensive top cover and it's built extra bulky/tight to minimize any recoil induced flex, etc.  For a battle sight, it's probably overkill, but for precision work it's much more ideal than this setup I'd think...
