Tristar C100 .380 Auto problems...
« on: February 27, 2014, 08:00:58 AM »
I have a Tristar C100 in .380 Auto that has a problem.  I sent the piece back to Tristar and have not yet communicated with them about what, if anything, they are doing for service/repair.  I included a detailed description of the problem.  I'm letting the process take its course.

The problem is that the slide binds up and will not chamber a round.  I have to physically push it home and sometimes with substantial force to overcome the drag.  I sent the gun to Tristar in a jammed postion so they would actually see the bound up slide.  When I first got the gun (new), it would not always chamber a round so I tuned the ejector which was snagging on the brass rim as it came up from the magazine and solved that issue.  As more rounds when through the gun, the slide started binding and refused to move forward chambering a new round.  After maybe 20 rounds at my last range session, I gave up fighting the slide and said this thing is going to Tristar.   I noticed scoring on the one side of the frame and it appears that the slide is 'rubbing' on the frame and not moving smoothly over that contact area.   I breakdown my guns after every range session so it was clean and lub'd.  I never had a similar problem with any of my other semi-autos.

Is this problem unique to my particular gun or have others had this problem?  My fear is Tristar might just claim the gun needs cleaning, operate the slide manually, declare it 'repaired' and send it back.  If so, it will become a gun locker paper weight.  When the gun worked, it worked really well.  It's a great range gun and plinker but it no longer works.

According to the shipper, they should have received the gun a week ago.  I doubt if they have gotten to it yet.  So it may take a few weeks before I receive it.  Stay tuned for an update...

please update.  a few other threads about tristar problems have died without an answer.  i have not been impressed with them, but the price of their firearms justifies lacking customer service i experienced. i bought for beater pistols when they were 299, but at current prices i'd lean toward dropping the extra 120 bucks for a CZ.  Unfortunately the turks are filling the niche market with things like a 380acp pcr.
i can only assume the earlier posts were resolved to customer's satisfaction or they would have come back and complained.  see crack in c100 slide - currently on page 4.  never updated...

You can be sure I'll post the results from Tristar.  They should have received the gun exactly one week ago so I'll call them today and check on its status.

Yeah, I agree the few extra bucks for a CZ is a no brainer but I want the gun in 380 Auto and I don't think CZ is importing in that caliber.  The reason I have it in 380 is for my shooting and motorcycling riding partner who is a 67 year old grandma.  She has to struggle to hang on to my CZ-75BD 9mm so the large framed C100 in 380 was ideal for her to handle.  Meanwhile, she's using my Bersa M85 in 380 and Thunder UC in 9mm and is doing OK with them.  If I can't get the C100 working properly, I'll go with the CZ 9mm compact with mild 9mm loads and/or a Beretta 84/85 medium framed 380.

Holy cow!  I called Tristar and they said they had received the gun on Friday, repaired it and shipped it back to me on Monday.  I had the gun in-hand a few hours after I called, no kidding, I have the gun and will take it to the range today to check it out.  I was expecting them to tell me it would be a week or more before they even got to it!!

Anyhow, they removed a burr from the slide, replaced the slide stop and it test fired OK.  Stay tuned for a range report...

That is good to hear! I hadn't heard much feedback, good or bad, on Tristar before.

OK, test results are in...I put 143 rounds through the C100 at the range this morning.  Every round fed, fired and ejected properly, however, the slide did not stay open on the last round.  I assume this is due to my using hand loads with 'mild' recoil powders.  The bullets were 100 grain copper plated (Berry's, Rainier's, Xtreme) with Unique, PB, SR7625 or SR4756.  Maybe with hotter loads the slide would been pushed back more allowing the slide stop to engage, dunno.  I'm not too concerned about this as I have other semi-autos which don't always keep the slide open on last round.  I will try hotter loads with HP38 and see what happens.

Bottom line:  Tristar received the gun and turned it around within one or two days and returned it to me in working condition within two weeks from the day I shipped it to the day I received it.   So the process worked for me with this gun and its particular problem.

Good job Tristar and thanks!!!!
