Accuracy Issue
« on: March 01, 2014, 11:34:07 AM »
I'm a little off topic here but this looked like the best place to ask.  I really like the CZ75B platform so I have one, an EAA Witness steel 9mm, an EAA Witness polymer 45 and a BUL Cherokee polymer 9mm.  All are accurate except for the BUL (which is a polymer Witness knockoff that uses CZ75B mags).  It just sprays bullets compared to the others.  The crown looks good and the slide is reasonably tight.  The trigger pull is light so that is not an impact.  I've tried 155 gr, 124 gr and 147 gr loads and they are all about the same. Does anybody have any ideas what I need to look at to fix this one?  Since this is a third level CZ knockoff I figured someone here may know.  Thanks in advance!

I could not figure out how to post a picture but I=here is one like I bought on Gunbroker.

Thanks Widge!

It's a nice pistol.  I just can't hit much with it.

How tight the slide to frame is is something for 1911 owners to brag about to one another, but it has very little to do with a gun's mechanical accuracy  because you don't aim with the frame.  The two places this is not true are when you're shooting from a gun-vise, in which case you literally are aiming from the frame, or when you're using optical sights that are mounted to the frame instead of the slide.

Remember that at the time the bullet leaves the barrel, the barrel/slide is either still locked or just starting to move.  And even if that weren't the case, so long as your sights are mounted to the slide, it's the relationship between the barrel and slide that determine how consistently your point of impact is vs your point of aim, not the relationship between your slide and frame.

Most of an auto-loader's accuracy has to do with how tightly and (more importantly) consistently the barrel locks into the slide.  Disassemble the gun and check to see if the barrel while locked in has any play in it at either the locking point or at the muzzle.  If so, that's most likely the main problem, and unfortunately, I don't know what you can do about it other than get another barrel and hope it fits better.  An actual gunsmith, which I am not, might be able to advise you better there, but I'm not sure what can be done, if anything, with a sloppy barrel.  One other possibility is that you have a generally crappy barrel, or that your barrel's bore is dramatically over-sized, and normally sized 9mm bullets, particularly jacketed ones, just aren't big enough to function well in it.  Have you tried shooting lead?

Barrel twist rate, type of rifling and length can also make a difference depending on the range your talking about.

Thanks for the ideas.  I'll slug the barrel and check twist rate to see if there is a problem there.  The barrel is rock solid in the frame when the slide is closed.  I have shot 115 gr and 124 gr FMJ and 147 gr lead with no apparent difference.  I only mentioned slide fit to say there is nothing obvious in the construction that looks unusual.  It seems like I need to concentrate on the bore and bullet fit first, which is easy to do. I'm not looking for pinpoint accuracy but I would like to keep all the shots on a 24" x 24" target at 25 yards.  I shot for a long time and this one has me baffled.  Any other ideas would be appreciated.

I slugged the barrel and got right at .356".  The bore diameter is wavy though.  It looks like it was hammer forged but not hammered enough to be smooth.  Strange looking.  I guess that is the problem but I can't explain why it really matters.

That's not much to ask for. How about the bbl bushing?  Is it a snug bbl fit and secured in the bbl like a CZ with the frony sight pin?

The only other thing I could think of. :-\
