VZ 58 Mags on sale
« on: March 22, 2014, 02:10:03 PM »
If this is in the wrong spot, moderators please move it.

AIM Surplus has VZ 58/VZ 2008 magazines on sale for $15.00  No pouch included, but the best single item price I've seen in a while.  Hope this helps somebody.

It doesn't help when shipping is $17.00 for a mag or 2. I went in with a friend and we bought 2 of the 4 mag and  a pouch deals at CTD. Split the shipping and it came out to $16.00 each mag shipped. I hate buying from them but hey....

I bought two of the 4 mag/pouch offerings from CTD as well. Quality of all the mags was excellent. Repainted black of
course, but all appeared unused. Leather belt pouches were in such good shape at first I thought they were repro. Only minor storage marks, mfg date of 1972. Checked back on CTD website and the mags are gone, for now.

These mags are the exact same that AIM is shipping with their current VZ2008s.

New paint -- appears to be a durable powdercoat.  I'd say the shade is more of charcoal or graphite than pure black.

Springs are also new, and I received 4 w/ my new 2008 and bought 8 separately.

Dent free.  These are truly remanufactured.  These are equivalent in quality (if not better quality) than the "New In Package" mags in the VZ Gray that Apex has been selling (purchased a couple of those as well).

I apparently had worse luck than you with my CTD VZ mags.  Some interesting trench art was on the pouches, but the mags were well worn.

If you have less than 10 mags per rifle -- get these while they've got them!

Found one mag at the gun show today. he had it marked $49.00. I told him about the AIM price and offered him a 20 for it.he took it. Seems to be brand new.

It seems like the prices may be approaching the point where someone will offer new-manufacture aftermarket mags.   Anyone making these yet?

No and we probably won't ever see this. Companies don't make product based on how cheap the price is. They make product based on demand. Although many hundreds of VZs have recently sold through the Aim Surplus deal and a few here and there from Czechpiont, we still have a long way to go before these rifles sell in any numbers to get any Mag companies attention. Look how long it took Magpul to finally start developing AK mags.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a Tapco or Promag type manufacturer try to market some polymer ones.

But really, the standard aluminum mags hold up great (much more durable than M16 aluminum Stanag mags), weigh about the same as what polymer would, and are ultimately going to be more durable than polymer (both to drop fracture and wear over time).  I just don't see the need.

The AIM mags are for all intents new.  I don't know for certain, but I'd imagine eventually we'll be seeing new, current production not new old stock, mil-spec aluminum mags out of Eastern Europe but to match the quality they'd be more like $30-40ish, not the $15 we're seeing the surplus stock at.

While I agree with your main point, 922(r) complicates the issue a bit.  Obviously, now that you mention it, I realize that the demand just isn't there.  We're not looking at anything like AK or SKS numbers, nor will we ever.  There aren't enough vz-58s out there in an absolute sense.

Tapco makes Galil mags for instance.  I would imagine the numbers of those are equivalent to less than the # of VZ 58s in the US, but can't find any VZ 58 US #s to compare.

They run $25 in like new to excellent in steel surplus.

So again, I'd imagine but other than 922r, there's not a lot of reason for them IMO.

And the bolt hold open channel probably makes polymer a little tricky too considering that slot's size and ensuring that portion of the mag is strong enough...  Maybe a steel screen lattice or something w/ thin polymer would do the trick?  Point being, it's not just a plastic cast in that part of the mag.
