I've been using "oak" with a drilled hole.  ;)

tap a 6x32 hole and bolt down your hammer with 2 nuts for spacers - it's easy to pound them down on the work table

towns - take a look at this side pic. You bolt the hammer down between the bolt head and the nuts. this will support the hammer and it won't move around on you. hammer 1 pin out at a time then unbolt your hammer and put the half driven pin in the female hole and drive it on out. this gives a solid surface to pound on without using wood or a vise
