CZ82 Question(s)
« on: March 29, 2014, 03:30:37 PM »
Just got a CZ82 from SOG and shot it today for the first time.  Very easy to shoot accurately out to 30 yds or so.  I was impressed by just how easily it shoots.  The finish is pretty bad, but for a surplus gun it shows character :-)

I did have several failures to return to battery.  Is it common for these guns to need new springs?  The slide would get the next round, just not chamber it...not sure if the recoil spring has weakened, or the Silver Bear ammo was just a little weak and not fully cycling the spring...what do you guys think?  Also, would the CZ83 spring be the same as the 82?

I am definitely going to have to rebuild the mag catch/release...only the right side button works (barely).  Thought I might get a new recoil spring as well...

While I haven't seen the problem you are, I will comment that lots of people buy the three-spring set from Wolff so they can tune the recoil vs slide effort tradeoff.

Mag release is a known headache.

I shot my 83 circa 1991 with the spring it came wih last week. I also just got a Wolff 16# spring in the mail.
A $11 spring is good peace of mind. YMMV.

Just ordered the "Recoil Tuning Kit" from Wolff which has 3 different recoil springs (and 3 fp springs???).  Seemed like a fair deal at ~$23 shipped.  Hopefully that will take care of the FTF issue.

Btw, I am really liking this gun.  Too bad they did not blue these like the p64's.  The CZ82 with a P64 finish...that would make for a very nice milsurp.

Clean / lube / massage the magazine catch components, especially any roughness on the mating surfaces first and see how it works.  Then when you order factory spec or Wolff three-pack recoil spring(s) with firing pin spring(s), you will know if you need to get some mag catch parts at the same time.  S/H charges on multiple orders add up quickly.

I was typing while you posted.  You may not need mag catch parts anyway.

Good point about the CZ82 with a P64 type finish

Just ordered the "Recoil Tuning Kit" from Wolff which has 3 different recoil springs (and 3 fp springs???).

I too bought this kit, and was told that when increasing the strength of the recoil spring it was wise to increase the strength of the fp spring in order to prevent slam fires.  I was new to semi-autos, so what did I know?  Lots of people vehemently assured me that the firing pin replacement was unnecessary, and I did not need to do it.  I did it anyway, mainly because I did not know the age of the spring that was in the pistol when I bought it, and hey, I had some new springs, and I wanted to learn how to do the replacement anyway.

Later, I found this:
http://www.warrelics.eu/forum/firearms-ordnance/cz-82-slam-fire-shot-threw-hand-36817/

So, decide for yourself about replacing the firing pin spring.  Personally, I think it's a good idea.

If you order a new recoil spring from Wolff they include a new firing pin spring.

I guess I should go ahead and change out the fp spring too...takes about 2 minutes to do.

To comment on the original problem, the heavier recoil spring did not entirely fix my issue...still had several not go to battery.  It may be the Silver Bear ammo...I noticed the case mouth hangs on the magazine's forward lip occasionally.  Ran Fiocchi (much hotter) ammo without a problem.

I almost always use Sellier & Bellot, Fiocchi, or GECO. I've used PrviPartizan with mixed results (occasional feeding problems).

It may be a magazine issue, nothing to do with the gun at all. Do you have other mags, and if so, does it mis-feed with all of them? And sometimes reassemble the mag spring improperly also.

yes I have 2 mags and it happens with both...I have disassembled/cleaned both and verified the spring and follower orientation.  I may try the 18lb spring to see if it helps.  I have the 16lb in now (I may have those numbers wrong, but I have installed the middle spring rate spring of the 3 in the kit...will now try the stiffest).

In the time I have used my CZ82, I have had ONE failure to do anything.  I got a single stove pipe, and it was with Brown Bear ammo.  With Fiocchi, aand PPU, which I normally use, I have never once had an issue.
