Safety re-install on early TZ-75??
« on: March 31, 2014, 10:55:15 AM »
I can't seem to get an answer to this problem on other forums....any ideas?  My safety on my Tanfoglio Combat Cohai (safety on the frame) slipped out under recoil and the little arrowhead shaped safety plunger went flying. Got the gun home with all the parts and noticed the spring on the safty shaft that rides on the safety shaft groove and prevents the safety from moving side to side and thus prevents the safety backing out of the frame had broken. I got a replacement spring from Gun Parts Corp and installed that on the sear shaft, but getting that plunger, which holds the safety switch up or down,  is under spring tension and rides on the side of the frame, is impossible to install with my fat fingers. How is this re-assembly done??

This site may help you and give you some idea on how to proceed: http://savvysurvivor.com/tanfoglio_witness_gunsmithing.htm

Very nice info, but it has the newer safety with the detent ball part of the safety switch.  Mine is an earlier version Tanfoglio safety...just like the pre B CZ75.

After a couple hours of cussing....I finally got the detent installed.  The safety switch is working and thanks to the new spring on the sear shaft, it doesn't seem like it will back out again.  I hope who ever invented that system is suffering in He.. right now.  The later guns where the safety has a detent ball are so much nicer.  Got to give Tanfoglio top marks for switching over to the newer system.

I now have 4 Tanfoglios.  2 transitional TZ-75 (Combat Cohai) from Israel, 2 Witness....one a small frame 9mm, and the second is a large frame 45 with a .22 kit.  I also have a Canik 55 S-120 (which is probably a closer copy of a CZ-75B than the Tanfoglios).  All are full size steel guns and all are fun to shoot.  As soon as funds come around, I'm getting a compact poly.

I hope to never have to disassemble any safety on the older guns for any reason for the rest of my days.....they are a real pain....but the old small frame guns are the coolest.

The pointy end faces front....toward the muzzle.

BTW I have 7 Tanfoglio pistols-6 with frame mounted safeties and naturally ALL of them are old enough to have the kinda flakey "plate" safety!!!   ;-) Today finished a full disassembly of all of them to polish things up following the advice in the Canik C100 tuneup post.

Smoothed all of them up noticeably.

I'm down to 4 Tanfoglio...only one with the old style safety.  That gun must have been worked over by an armorer in Israel because it sure is the smoothest with best trigger.....so despite the difficult design, I'm holding on to it.  But I'm not searching for any more.  My 5th in the collection is the Canik 55 S120.  Bless their heart, they tried...but the small frame Tanfoglios, used or new, are the better deal in my book.

Well, as is usual with my luck-the first pistol I disassembled had the flakiest safety of the group and parts went flying as soon as the safety plate cleared the side of the frame.

The problem with the plate in this pistol is that the end was worn almost round from what I can only assume was considerable use in its past life.  This pistol is a Combat Shooting Cohai that is a Series 88 but such an early variant that the hammer pin is secured by a vertical pin dropped down through the rail edge of the frame just like a CZ75. Tanfoglio said it was made in 1989 and sent to Israel Weapons House LTD.

Pistol is in beautiful condition but also had the smoothest trigger pull of all of them-I'm assuming due to lots of use but the external condition of the pistol is literally perfect with the only noticeable wear on the outermost edge of the rather large blade safety.

I got out the trusty Dremel and put two VERY small "half moon" indentations on either side of what should have been the pointed end of the plate.  This gave enough purchase to insert the plate on the safety allow it to remain there when under pressure of the plate spring.

Safety works great with a very positive click when activated.

Congratulations on finding a fix for it!  8)

Everything that's shiny in the picture EXCEPT for the slight rub-through on the safety is all light reflection.

The first two of ten shots at 10 yards went high because I wasn't "ready" for the even lighter and smoother trigger after the polishing.

That's a 1 inch dot and yes, I was leaning on a bench!  ;)

Takes the same Meg Gar MG GT21-16 MAGS that all of my other small frames take. Note the retaining pin for the hammer pin

Thanks! It's one of three TZ's I got from Cole's when he first started importing them a good while ago so they all are beautiful inside and out.

He listed them at 85%-he's a way tougher grader than anyone I know!  ;)
