Need Sugestions
« on: July 03, 2014, 08:57:54 AM »
If you saw my previous thread about converting my CZ83 to 9x18 using the barrel from an 82 frame you would have seen that I have decided to build/restore the 82.  I found an older 83 that I have using as a parts gun.  the 83 is blued while the 82 is painted.  The 82 has a little bit of paint chipping on the slide.  I am thinking of building the 82 and having it blued.  or should I try to refinish it in black paint? Mahovsky hard chrome?

Suggestion #1 - Mahovsky's Metalife

Suggestion #2 - Bluing by Fogle's Gunsmithing

Ron Mahovsky and Loren Fogle both do excellent work and are great guys to deal with.

I spoke to Ron Mahovsky today and he offered a pretty cool deal.  I send him the complete 83 I bought as a parts gun along with the 82 frame/barrel and slide and he will send me back a hard chromed and tested 82!  This will save me the trouble of building the 82 myself.  He also told me his personal carry gun is a metalife 82 that he said is better to carry than a blued one.  I asked why hard chrome was a better carry gun and he said it was less lethal.... HUH???  He then went on to tell me that he has a government contract to statin nickel shot guns because the government considers them "less lethal"  because it can be seen at night which lessens the chance of having to pull the trigger.  Something to think about...

Can't pass up a deal like that! As I said, Ron's a great guy. I'm sure you'll be happy.

yes, seems like a great way to the get the gun built.  It really isn't anymore work for him.  He said he prefers getting working guns to that he can take apart, put back together and test.  I just need to include the 82 frame and slide with the complete 83.  I will get back a beautiful 82 and an extra 83 frame and slide to sell.

Since I am using an older 83 as a donor, all the parts are exactly the same except for the main spring cap which has no provision for a lanyard.  Should I just use the 83 cap or shop around for a 82 main spring cap with the lanyard hole?

I'd try to find one off an 82, just to make it more authentic. Apex has them, and there are probably other sources, too.  https://www.apexgunparts.com/product_info.php/cPath/77/products_id/3556

Thanks for the link.  I just bought it.  I was going back on forth on this piece since the gun won't be original with wood grip and Mahovsky Metalife Chrome, and I don't use a lanyard.  But.. That one little piece does distinguish it from a 83.  Thanks for the push in the right direction.
