SP-01 vs. SP-01 Tactical
« on: February 03, 2007, 07:19:36 PM »
I went to a gun show today.  I had been thinking of getting a SIG 226 but went to the gun range today.  My boss is from California and has never owned a gun and bought a shotgun recently and wanted to shoot clays and let me teach him how.  Anyway, he wanted me to bring along a pistol to see if he wanted to buy one soon or down the road...so I brought my P-01 since I shoot it better than anything and apparently him too.  He was blowing out the bullseye before he used up one magazine with it and with my mediocre pointers.  THe point to this was that I pushed out of my mind any thought of the SIG (not that it is a bad gun I will probably get one down the road) and moved the SP-01 purchase to the head of the class.

So, after shooting I go to the gun show and look for SP-01s.  There were a few but I wanted to get a SP-01 Tactical so I would not have to mess around with getting the night sights installed later and I prefer the decocker.  They were all reasonably priced between $467-$478.  One table had a SP-01 Tactical but sold it with the tactical block/bayonet.  I would prefer the night sight and decocker set up but does the tactical also come only with the bayonet block?  That tactical was priced at $587 and was the only one at the whole show, the rest just had traditional safeties.  I would be happy with a SP-01 w/out a decocker if it meant I had to shell out $100 extra to get it and a piece of Rambo gear that I will never use.  But also, the night sights alone are worth that including install.  Any thoughts?  Can you get the Tactical w/out the bayonet block or will I have to buy the package to get the Tactical pistol?  Should I not worry to much and just buy the SP-01 w/ a safety?

As a side note, when I was at the range there were two guys on either side of me who had new S&W M&Ps.  One guy had a 9mm and the other a .40.  The guy with the 9mm was not serious, just trying to get the feel of his gun, the guy with the .40 had been there for over an hour shooting trying to sight it in using rests and stuff as well as taking his time; it took him minutes to go through one magazine.  He offered to let me shoot his in exchange for shooting my P-01.  His M&P felt good in the hand but the sights were all over the place and I could group okay but always shot low and left and pulled a shot every 3 or 4 rounds.  The guy who shot my CZ, who had yet to get his M&P into the 10 ring which he had covered with one of those Shoot-N-C targets (the black ones with the neon green backing that made your holes more pronounced) had blown out his bullseye with the CZ in one magazine.  I wish I was that good with a pistol but I think there is at least one more "convert" out there after today since he was asking about price, reliability, availability of accessories, etc. after he shot it.

The Tac block you saw at the show is NOT the standard setup. Just the gun, case, snap caps, cleaning implements, magazines, loader and manual.

As eerw said, the Tactical has Meprolight tritiums, but many of the standard SP-01's have come with the, too! Looks for the words "Tru-Dot" on the right side of the rear sights to indicate the Meprolights.

Okay, I'll look more.  The SP-01s I saw did not have night sights.  Only the one with "TACTICAL" stamped on the receiver above the caliber markings, which included the bayonet block, had the night sights.  All the ones with safeties and simply marked SP-01 had factory white dots.  But I will look around since this was a small gun show and there is a larger one in two weeks in the Dallas area.

i got my SP-01 a couple months ago and it had the safety and night sights. i wasnt looking for the night sights, but it happen to come with  it.

i would keep on looking for the one you want.  btw, with shipping, my SP-01 was a tad over 500.

edit:

also, there isnt any "tactical" stamped anywhere on my pistol.  but it does have the 3 notches in the rail.

My SP01 came with night sights as well.  It's a "regular" one, not the Tactical decocker.  I prefer to have a regular safety and not a decocker (different strokes...).  I couldn't tell you exactly how much they charged me for it, as it was a trade deal...IOW, they said "we'll take your 2, you give us XXX dollars, and we'll give you these two."  The grand total for the two new pistols (SP01 & DW PM7) would've been over $1500 at "list price", but the trade made true dollar amounts/prices kind of fluid...what they said was that my trade ins were worth $950, and I didn't pay an additional $550 (not even close, unless you add the cases of 9mm ammo I bought).

Will do.  It should be in for next weekend (they said their distributors usually move pretty fast and it normally takes 5 days or less).  Knowing me, I'll probably go put another 200rnds through the SP01 and 300 or so through the PM7. :rollin

Where did you order your SP-01?  That sounds like a great deal, especially with the Night Sights.

Well, it's official...I'm hooked on CZs!  I finally got that SP-01 Tactical I've been wanting.  So, next on the list of CZs is the 97, which I debated buying today instead of the SP-01 but it was more expensive.  Finally got someone to sell the Tactical model without insisting that they only came with the bayonet and tactical block.  Can't wait to go shoot it tomorrow!

Enjoy the SP-01.  Mine has become the most accurate of my CZs.

mbott,

A day at the range proved you correct about the SP-01.  I was horrible in the past with pistols but CZs seem to shoot themselves.  At 10 yards I put all except 2 rounds from one mag (18 in all) through the bulls-eye.  The two I think came from fatigue; I had just spent about an hour on the rifle range so I was pretty near the end of shooting and just wanted to see if the SP-01 was in the same ballpark as my P-01.

I also tried a silhouette target at 15 yards.  Needless to say, the target got 18 through the heart and 16 through the head; two in the shoulder.  I also tried out my Glock UTL for the first time.  I must say this is a good laser/light combo and very competitive in price with a quality name like Glock behind it.

Here are some pics:
