Low power recoil spring....

Anyone know where we can find a low power recoil spring for the kadet kit?

As far as I know, they don't exist.

I'd like to try a heavier spring, but alas, they don't exist.

The only recourse as of now is to find a cut-to-length spring (they usually come in 12"+ lengths) with the same OD, slightly smaller (or larger) wire OD and coil count.

Then, all that is left is to test it out and see if it gets you the results you are looking for.

I don't really know if it's worth it,  but I made a simplistic spring weight measuring device using a post mounted in a board and the compressed length of the existing spring found by simple measurements.

With the spring on the post,  just add weight on top until it reaches the  compressed length in the pistol.  I used a known 10 lb weight plus Tare weight plus 125gr bullets for the weight testing. ;D
The weight came out darn close to the weight quoted by the manufacturer.  Rough testing of a replacement spring could save most of the trial and error.
Rough sketch:

I rigged up a way to use my fish scale to measure the weights of recoil and hammer springs. I used two springs from CGW as my control weights as I knew their weights. The readings on these were within 2 ozs. of what they were stated to be. I then put a Kadet recoil spring in the rig and measured it. I got a reading of 4 lbs. 15 ozs. just before the coils touched. I would call it a 5 lb. spring which seems about right for .22 ammo.

In the next few days I will work on the design for the tester and post pictures. The only problem at this point is that my fish scale only goes to 15 lbs. I will try to locate one that will handle twice that weight. Even  25 lb. scale would handle most if not all the springs I am likely to come across.

may I ask 'why?"  the initial inquiry to the lighter?  or perhaps even stronger spring? what is the benefit or goal you are seeking?  it may not be related to that spring.

Kevin,  I have a box full of unknown weight recoil springs.  ;D ;D
{along with hammer springs}

I was trimming recoil springs to lower the weight & length when they were too long for the 75B on the short guide rod..  Not the best solution,  but it does work.

Kevin,

As to a lighter recoil spring, some may only have or can get lower velocity ammo and might have cycling issues with the stock spring.

As to a heavier recoil spring, the only thing holding the bolt flush against the barrel is the recoil spring.
When running a lighter hammer spring, it may help with consistent seating of the round in the chamber to eliminate the chance of the round not being fully in battery.

Hello,
First post to this board. I joined to seek answers in helping to resolve the issue of stove piping on my Kadet. It looks as though others have had many issues with their Kadets as well. Is cutting down the recoil spring a turn at a time a viable method in solving the FTE issues using SV ammo in the Kadet?
Thanks for the help?

rjn,

That may work, but if I were you, I would order an extra factory recoil spring or two to have on hand just in case you remove too many coils.
