New to CZ. Have a few questions
« on: November 29, 2014, 03:54:36 PM »
I picked up my first CZ.  Bought a CZ75 Shadow Custom in excellent condition.  Took it to the range and was very impressed with the accuracy compared to my Glock 17.  The ergos are just amazing.   I have enjoyed Glocks, but my plan is to use the Shadow in IDPA ESP next year.

My biggest concern is how complex the CZ is compared to the Glock.  Glocks are simple and so easy to detail strip and keep clean.

The CZ seems to have many small parts, including screws and springs.

I have the following questions.

1.  How many rounds roughly can I go before I need to do a complete detail strip and cleaning?  I plan on doing normal field strip and cleaning after each outing, but wanted to get an idea how long I can go before having to do a detailed cleaning.

2.  What is the best resource for explaining what areas should be cleaned and oiled during normal cleaning?  I have seen a few Youtube videos.

3.  It seems like the CZ's are generally reliable, but I would like to know which areas I should pay extra attention to, to make sure the gun operates properly.  For example, are there certain screws that need to be checked?

4.  My understanding is the CZ's without the firing pin block are OK to dryfire without an issue.  Is that correct?

5.  Are there any books or DVDs that goes into detail about the CZ75?  (ie detail strip and maintenance)  My quick check did not find much.

Thanks for any help.  I am looking forward to using the CZ.

Glock is not a SA/DA gun with doublestrike capability with a decocker or safety. They are just a bang stick!

Just to make things easy, I will tell you for the first 10K rounds or so, you will be ok if you field strip, remove grips, hose it down with Barristol or brake cleaner then apply CLP of choice w/ light application of moly grease on slide rails. By that time you will have had time to watch thy youtube videos and have purchased hammer and punches appropriate to the task.

A non issue, run the gun!

This ^^^^^. Check out the gunsmithing section. Lots of useful info and different ways of cleaning. Check out some threads by member Joe L. You'll be amazed at how dirty you can run these things. One thing that I'll note is that CZ's like to run wet. Especially the trigger bar and slide. Make sure these are lubed good. In the gunsmithing section you'll be able to find out all the answers to your questions.

I'd just done the quick field strip clean to 6500 rounds.   Doing the brake cleaner thing made the trigger lighter and smoother.   In the future, I will do it about every 1000.

Thanks for the info.  It is good to hear that the CZ will run for a long time without too much attention.

Yes, I was thinking the CZ would want to run wetter than the Glocks I have used.  With the full metal rails, I was putting additional oil on them.

There was mention of putting oil on the trigger bar.  If someone has a link to good pictures or videos that you can post showing the spots to oil, I would appreciate it.

Looking forward to using the CZ next season.  Here in Ohio, IDPA matches will start up in March.  That will give me time to do some dry fire practice and shoot and the indoor range some.  Also need to get use to flipping the safety off when I do the draw from the holster.  I will shoot the CZ in ESP.

Brian, where in Ohio are you?  I'm in the SW near Dayton.

Just because your Shadow has a safety does not mean you have to use it.  The Shadow is just fine in SSP, just lower the hammer all the way down manually and leave the safety off to use the pistol DA/SA.

Here's how you lower the hammer with the least risk of an ND and DQ:

The thumb roll is the way to go.  Never a problem decocking for matches or practice.

alpha, I live a little bit northwest of Columbus.  This year I shot IDPA at Richwood gun and game club.  I have shot down at Pickaway before, but not this year.

Where do you shoot?

This is my first interaction with DA/SA, so I will probably shoot ESP so I can start in SA.  With some training, hopefully it will not add any time flipping the safety off in the holster.
