Reload/hunting question
« on: January 19, 2015, 01:03:33 PM »
The 160gr Lee bullet I use in 7.62x39mm, the one on the left,

seems to have some serious potential powdercoated, to gain some serious velocity with some good smackdown down range. I'm thinking MAYBE this might be good for coyote? I know the soft point to the right would be best for almost everything BUT I haven't been able to find any soft points out here or online for quite a while.

Thoughts?

BTW, saw what some coyotes did to a calf that was still being born...my warm fuzzies about 'yotes are all gone.

I think your coated lead would work fine for 'yotes...

but Powder Valley has Sierra Pro Hunter and Game-King bullets in .308 and .311 in a variety of weights if you wanted to try them.

I can cook up a batch of PC lead "boolets" a lot cheaper than ordering them, too. :) But thank you - I really like the 123 grain soft point for my go-to for everything else other than plinking bullet, when i can FIND the dadgum thangs!

Of course I would favor that 123 grain soft point, driven fast.  But lacking that, I would favor the 160 grain Cast RN.  Any way of Hollowpointing it or cutting an X in the nose?

Had to shoot one two years ago that charged me. I had already drawn on him when he decided to come after me.
Some of the local "yotes" have lost their fear of humans.

I mostly use a .223 with a 52 grain CCI/Speer FB-JHP over either W748 or H335, when hunting Coyotes, but I have also used a 7x57mm Mauser.
I've read that the .22 Magnum can be effective on Coyotes, but I've not tried it as yet.

PV has the 123 gr SST by Hornady for 7.62, but not the SP.

armoredman, Air-cooled WW ran 1900 fps would do fine for yotes but, I don't know if they would expand when powdercoated. Fill up 5 or 6 gallon jugs with water, then do a comparison test against the soft point and post your results.

You'll probably get better penetration with cast bullets but for coyotes I'd advise against it.  The dog might be shot clean through and mortally wounded but still be able to run off or worse, and be dangerous until it expires.

There are a few options you could do to make them "more lethal".

1. Take a file and flatten the point.  This may give you reliability issues if running in the VZ, but won't matter in the 527.

2. Place a sheet of paper inbetween the two mould cavities.  This makes a projectile that splits into two halfs upon impact.  This takes testing to get right and I have no idea how it would react with powder coat.

3. Cast the noses of the bullet of pure or near pure lead and the base of hard alloy.  When the bullet impacts the target, the soft lead will mushroom or blow by and the base will smash through like a wadcutter.  Again, I have no idea how this will react with PC.

Armoredman, have you tried the tipped Hornady bullets like the Vmax or SST?  They're available, and will probably explode or expand enough to dump a lot more energy into a lightly built target like a coyote.

If it were me, I'd stick with those 129s. Considering the effective hunting range of the 7.62 x 39mm, there's really nothing to be gained by using a 160. Energy and trajectory obviously favor the lighter/faster bullets and expansion is essentially a non-factor with cast GC bullets.

I still have an abundance of 150 gr. .30-30 bullets where the Remington is about the most pointed in shape of the different rounds. I had planned to load them up to a max charge of X-Terminator or TAC for a medium range whitetail load with about 150 yards being max. Never got to try it because I never managed to find an SKS that didn't give a horizontal cut about midway up the case upon firing and ejecting. The .30-30 bullets are .308" of course, but I figured I could still develop a load capable of hunting accuracy at the prescribed distance, and for hogs as well.  ;)
