Welding VZ magazines? What type of aluminum?

Has anyone successfully welded VZ magazines? Any idea which aluminum alloy they are made from? We tried TIG welding a cracked feed lip (the outer part) and it would not puddle, it just burned. Of course, we took the paint off first.
