Re-crowning barrel
« on: February 02, 2015, 08:02:58 AM »
I finally got to bench rest test my VZ58 for accuracy the other week and the results were not good. Best group managed at 100m (from a gun rest and 4x scope) was 3.5", worst 8.5"!! Tried 5 different weight/brand of ammo and there was virtually no difference from 55gr to 75gr (barrel has a 1 in 7 twist)

When i got home i had a look at the crown of my gun and theres a tiny ding at the 12 o'clock position. Took it to a local gunsmith and he confirmed it. He said he could re-cron it but i'd need to get the barrel out of the recevier. From looking on Youtube this appears to require some serious equipment.

Do you really have to cut out a pin and then hydraulic press the barrel out of the receiver!?

May I ask, where did you buy your vz58? Is the barrel an original or a U.S. made?

Yes. But why bother? Send it back to CSA/Czechpoint and have them fix or replace it.

No you don't, while it's true the gunsmith needs the barrel out to work with it on a lathe, re crowning can be done with hand tools, guided tools,

Never done it myself, but as mentioned above it seems it can be done with hand tools.  Here's one of many videos:

It's worth looking into.

The barrel install is something I wish CSA or others would modernize...

Regardless, did it arrive that way?  And is it chromed?  With chrome, barrel crowning is more of a challenge as chrome likes to flake.  Haven't done it before, but it's something you want to do w/ specific tools for the job, not diy w/ your drill or whatnot w/ chrome...

And since most Czechpoint guns come w/ muzzle devices these days, I'm assuming yours did too.  If so, Czechpoint doesn't really have a good leg to stand on w/ it somehow being your fault...  It's a $1k+ gun.  Make them fix it.  Let's see how their warranty is!

I should probably fill in some of the profile details on my account, I'm in the UK!

I hadn't been getting any response from the suppliers until this morning (supposedly some nearby roadworks knocked out their phone lines for 2 weeks....). Anyway, they've agreed to have it collected and re-crowned FoC, so it looks like i should have a gun back that can hit the side of a barn within a week or so  ;D
