hammer spring changout on 3 CZ's
« on: January 22, 2015, 06:23:02 PM »
i would like to change out all 3 hammer springs on my CZ's. they are. P01/Sp01 tactical/and 75 compact. can i get some help on which springs to buy for each pistol? also, [and this may sound stupid] but im not even sure what the hammer spring is. ive only read that it improves the trigger a bit. is it easy to install? this isnt a recoil spring right? thanks for the help folks ;D

The hammer spring is located in the butt of the gun, around the hammer strut.  If you take off your grips you'll be able to see the hammer spring hiding behind the mag brake.

To remove, remove slide from gun and decock the hammer.  Remove grips.  Push the butt of the gun against a hard surface (or use your thumb) to depress the lanyard loop (if you gun has one) or the little round plug in the butt.  With pressure applied, push out the pin that holds the plug in place.  Slowly release tension and the plug/lanyard loop will come out of the frame.  You may also need to remove the mag brake for the plug to come all the way out.  Once the plug is out the hammer spring will fall out.

Assembly is in reverse.

I have a tendency to go with the lighter springs.  13 lb hammer spring will result in a much lighter pull than stock, but you may need the extended firing pin and reduced firing pin spring to avoid lite primer strikes.  If you go with the 11.5 hammer spring definitely recommend the extended firing pin/spring.  CGW's website has some good info in the hammer spring section.  I think he recommends 15 lbs as the lightest hammer spring without the extended firing pin/spring.

A hammer spring swap can improve the DA trigger significantly. The SA marginally.

One good thing about springs is that they are not expensive. I am running 15-11.5 CWG hammer spring in my different CZ's currently. I am testing different spring out to see what i like in different guns.

I would suggest buying a few different weights to try them out. Or if you are running the stock firing pin grab a CGW/CZC 15#, see how you like it and go from there. I believe that the stock hammer springs are 18# or greater in the CZ's you have listed. Not 100% on this.

What they said ^^^^^^^^.
I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with both choices,  but the 13# was my fav for some time.
I'm down to a 8.5# hammer spring on my primary comp. 75 Shadow,  and it is superb for comp. use.  Mine will only fire Federal Pistol Primers reliably plus needed a lighter firing pin spring and an extended Firing pin to be reliable with the Federal Primers.

For me the 13#  hammer spring was the easiest to run a wide variety of pistol primers reliably.  The 15# spring definitely will run almost any ammo primers reliably.  Some of the Russian primers won't fire in some guns even with stock hammer springs,  so it's a choice to consider:  cost vs reliability.

installed the 13# on the new 75C. like the first time you do something, it was a tussle. the next two were easy on the P01 and SP01. 15# is good and[noticeable] but the 13# is awesome [all snap capping btw]

My first CZ was a P-01.  My second was a BD Police.  Both models come with lanyard loops.

I changed them both out to flush ones.  I didn't understand why people said changing hammer springs was difficult, UNTIL I did one with the flush hammer spring plug.   O0

My CZs all have the flush fit plug.  I press the butt of the gun into the side of my work table with my left hand and right hand pushes out the pin with a punch.  Then get down on my hands and knees to find the pin...

CGW has the Joe Tool available for hammer spring swaps. I cant say its really necessary but i like giving CGW my money.  ;D

finally had some decent weather today. so I took the 75 compact out and tried out the 13# hammer spring. I took 60 rnds of freedom munitions 115gr reman with me and had a single light strike. not bad ;D the DA pull was super nice compared to the stock spring. all in all, im happy with the results even though I do have a backup 15# just in case.
