Just a wag ,  but did you check the firing pin channel for obstructions or crud build-up?
Since it fired "sometimes" crud or a broken spring part/broken retainer pin part may be preventing full travel.

With the FP out, you can spray the FP channel with non-chlorinated brake cleaner if there is any kind of crud build up.

"Schmeky" here on the forum is CGW.  He may have a better suggestion.

Hope you find it soon.

Does the hammer go through its full range of motion those times when the FPB lever does not raise fully?

If it were me, I'd replace all the springs, pins, hammer and sear, maybe the trigger as well.
Check out this thread about restoring an old and well-used BD: BD RESTO PROJECT--UP DATED--

Rock-it3, I suspect you are getting a handle on my problems.  Thank you for your comments and input.

I had been repeatedly pulling the trigger with the hammer already down to check what the FBP lever was doing.
When I checked to see what the hammer was doing to answer your query, I noticed that the hammer was not dropping when pulling the trigger on the majority of trigger pulls.  When the hammer drops, the FBP lever seems to be moving more.

After experimenting, I also discovered that I can dramatically increase the likelihood of the hammer dropping by pulling up (vertically) as I pull back on the trigger.  In fact, when I pull up and back on the trigger, the hammer drops almost 100% of the time.  I hope my description is understandable.

Thanks again.

I believe I understand your description. This, I believe, points to what Grendel said earlier, that the disconnector is probably the culprit. The disconnector disconnects the hammer from the sear. It seems like it is disconnecting too soon. This would mean the FPB lever isn't raising high enough to disengage the FPB from the firing pin. Also, those times when it is raising the lever high enough, the hammer still may not be cycling fully, therefore not "whacking" the firing pin with full force, causing the light strikes.

I am not a gunsmith, or an expert. Can anyone else in this thread confirm my thoughts?

You explained it pretty good Rock-it. Sounds like the timing is off a little.

Thank you for your time and advice, gentlemen.

I will wait another 24 hours or so before I disassemble the gun, to see if anyone else wants me to test anything else before I take it apart.

When I have it apart, I will plan on replacing the disconnector and the FBP lever, as well as anything else that appears worn.

I found a couple of helpful disassembly videos on youtube.  If anyone here has a disassembly tutorial they think highly of, I would appreciate you sharing it with me.

Thanks again.

If you're gonna replace parts, think about adding the short reset. Since you already have the ultra light kit, you'll have to call CGW. All you should need is the modified FP block lifter. They don't list the lifter separately, so that's why you have to call.
Add the type 2 disco and you'll be amazed IMHO.
Just thinking out load, since you're planning on replacing the lifter and disco anyways[emoji6]

I edited my first post to explain the actual issue and its correction in order to save future readers from having to read through all of the posts.

Thanks again to all posters for your time and recommendations.
