Which rifle for a 8 year old girl?
« on: March 23, 2015, 10:24:49 AM »
Good morning.  So today my daughter turned 8 and she wants to go to the range with daddy soon makes me extremely happy :).  So the question I have is which .22 would be good for her? She is 42 inches tall and about 40 pounds.  Which of the CZ line up would fit her well?  I am trying to get her something that is not too intimidating in terms of size or bulk and has a comfortable length of pull now, meaning I'd rather get her a rifle that she can shoot very comfortably now and upgrade the size as she grows, vs getting her something that she can grow into. It also has to be bolt action. I am pretty much set on buying CZ but unfortunately none of the gunshops in my area have them in stock so I cannot take her to the shop and have a fitting.  What would your recommendation be?

I wouldn't go CZ at that age. I'd get a rifle specifically made for a young child. if she likes it and sticks with it, you can move up as she gets older and more confident.

I would look at these:

They have a wide variety.

Thanks Grendell. Do you think that Scout is too big and heavy for her? What I don't like about Crickett and Henry small bolt is that they have separate cocking action.  In my opinion it just adds an unnecessary level of complexity.  She will have her little hands and head full already with operating trigger, safety, finger, bolt, pointing rifle properly, safety rules, adding manual cocking on top of that becomes too much and counter intuitive later on.  More importantly it becomes counterintuitive to me now, I am well engrained with traditional  bolt actions and prefer to stick with a system that I can operate on autopilot and focus my thinking on what she is doing that way I can keep it safe and fun.  Any other smaller rifles that offer traditional bolt setup.

I think she may be a little young and small for a Scout. Your objections to the Crickett are valid but consider: at 8 years of age, Daddy should be not only instilling the safe habits of shooting, along with the actual mechanics, but also ensuring the young shooter is following them. It's not as though you give her a lesson then turn her loose on the range. I think you'll be surprised how quickly your daughter masters the seeming complexity of using a rifle whatever brand or manual of arms you choose.

I agree with Viking. The dimensions on the Scout are similar, with the Scout being about 2" longer and about 2 lbs heavier. LOP is the same. If she's going to start off shooting offhand the weight would be a major consideration.

I think it's a rifle that she'll grow into.
I had the right to remain silent...

but not the ability.

I bought a 10/22 and cut the stock. Cricket is only for very small kids. Restock the 10/22 later and you can use it your whole life for plinking and hunting.

This is pretty funny.  I just posted the same question about my 8 yo girl, 452 Scout or 452 Trainer since there is only 1.5 inches difference in length of pull.  But my little girl is 58 lbs and slightly tall for her age.  Looking at that video, the discontinued 452 Special Military Trainer it is!  She can grow into it and its both a collectable now, and a better rifle out of the box.
