Considering a 455 Lux
« on: May 02, 2015, 08:58:59 PM »
'Thinking of getting back into the .22LR platform.  'Did a bit of research and decided on a quality sub-$400 bolt action .22LR rifle with iron sights.  The CZ 455 Lux was on the short list which includes a few offerings from Ruger, Savage, and Marlin.  Of course, my heart's on the CZ -- beautiful wood stock, quality bolt action rifle.  (I must admit, the safety is on a strange location.)

Planning on shooting it with iron sights only for now but will eventually consider a quality scope for anything farther than 50 yards.  This will just be for paper/steel target shooting, no hunting.

How are the iron sights on the 455 Lux?

What's everyone's opinion on the Nikon Prostaff Target EFR?

You probably should have posted in the rimfire section, but one of the mods will move it.

The 455 sights are du=different from the 452 tangent sights. I don't own a 455 so I can't speak to the quality. CZ offers a kit to upgrade to the tangent sights for about $100.

If you always shoot the same distance the 455 sights are probably fine.
I had the right to remain silent...

but not the ability.

If shooting open sights, I would look for a 452 with the tangent sights.  They are the best factory sights out there.

The Nikon is a nice scope, but a little long to mount without removing the rear sight to get proper eye relief on CZ's with the tangent sight.  To mount and leave the rear tangent, you need a scope 11" or shorter.

Thanks for the advise guys -- I'll look around for the 452 w/ the tangent sights then.

Ya, for a range gun, the tangent sights are pretty convenient.  I have both 455 and 452 luxes and for a field/hunting gun, really prefer the 455 sights. But that's a personal preference thing.

Both are hard to beat for cheap 22 fun!

Okay, 'been searching up and down and it's pretty hard to come by a 452 Ultra Lux or the 452 Training rifle in .22LR -- both appear to be the only 452s that have the tangent sights it seems (pls correct me if I'm mistaken).  The very few I came across are priced higher, a couple are even above suggested retail price.

A post from June 2010 discussed differences between the 452 and 455 American, so that gave me information on the differences between the 2 in terms of their construction (bolt, receiver, sear, trigger guard, etc.).  However, feedback on accuracy, performance, and reliability on the interwebs is rather mixed, so... I'm taking those with a grain of salt.

Now, with the 455 UL and 455 Training rifles, both with the excellent tangent sights, is there any reason why I shouldn't go for one of these instead?  Is there a significant difference between the 452 and 455 in terms of accuracy or reliability?

Both have great accuracy, 455's tend to need a bit more fine tuning.  If you get a 455 and don't have a good torque screwdriver, figure that into your costs.

The 452 lux also had tangent sights.

Sorry I couldn't see where you are located.  In San Diego, there are 452 UL's and Trainers sitting on shelves collecting dust.  Granted, they are priced a bit high, but not higher than MSRP.

Haven't seen a 452 lux right hand 22 sit on a shelf for more than a day though.

All 452 models that had sights had tangent sights.

The only 455 models with tangent sights are the Trainer and Ultra-Lux.

Okay, it looks like if I want to get this rifle at a decent price anytime in the near future, I'll have to get the 455 version.

Crossing fingers now after placing an order for a 455 Training Rifle (02100)... $319 + S&H to NY.

Edit: Had to order online (Lanbo's Armory) since my area isn't graced with CZ merchandise.
