CZ 85B FTF
« on: July 30, 2015, 11:12:24 PM »
Hello all
Went to the range today to try out a used 85B that I picked up last week. Shot great as all CZ'S do, but I did have a few hiccups. When the magazine got down to the last 2 or maybe 3 rounds the slide would not go all the way into battery, it took a tap on the rear of the slide to get the round fully chambered, The remaining rounds cycled fine. It happened on 2 different mags, that I believe both came with it. Didn't happen every time but probably 1 out of 3 mags. Time to replace the magazine springs? Or recoil spring? Or both? Thanks

Have you thoroughly cleaned the pistol: especially around and behind the extractor?  CZs also like to run well lubed on the trigger bar,  and rails.

If you have another mag that you know functions,  try that one to eliminate the mags..

If you don't know the round count on the pistol,  I personally would replace the mag springs.   The +5% or 10% mag springs perform well in my CZs.
The recoil spring can be judged by the distance it's tossing the cases and knowing what ammo you were shooting.

What ammo were you using?I had similar problems with reloads the cases of which were not properly re-sized. But never with any of the factory loads that I use regularly.

Another reason could be a weak recoil spring, with not enough oomph to get the slide back to full battery. I believe a weak mag spring would actually give a failure to feed, and not a failure to go into battery.

And as 1SOW has mentioned, it could be as simple as some cleaning and lubrication.

However, the frequency or rarity of occurance (once or twice in 3 mags) makes me want to believe that this is ammo related.

It was factory ammo. I do have some new mecgar  mags that I will try. The round would make it about 1/3 to 1/2 way up the feed ramp. Could be a weak recoil spring, I was all the way on the far right lane at the range so I have no idea how far the rounds were ejecting. I'm starting to lean more toward the magazine spring, more tension when it's fuller, less when down to the last couple rounds causing the unreliable feeding.

A round not going beyond 1/3 to 1/2 of the feed ramp is a failure to feed to me. Failure to return to battery is only 1 or 2mm (0.05-0.1") of forward slide travel remaining, which is in essence a failure to feed, but more specific elaboration  of the issue. I would think weak mag spring too in your case.

Just Ordered some +10% magazine springs from midway and a few different recoil springs just for the heck of it.

FWIW:  You might save $$, especially shipping $$ by checking Wolff Springs at gunsprings.com before your next week order.

Okay I installed new +10% magazine springs and a new 16lb recoil spring...... and the problem is worse. Now I am getting failure to feeds on the two magazines with replaced springs and two new mecgar magazines. Before the failure was always with two rounds left in the magazine, now they happen at random points, several times per magazine. Also it was several types of ammo. Is the recoil spring to heavy and not allowing enough time for the round to chamber? Any thoughts?
Thanks

A 16# recoil spring is really heavy for a 75/85.  If memory serves,  the 14# recoil spring is stock and will handle hot loads.

Try using the older recoil spring with new mag spring. Also, give it a thorough cleaning and lube it well.

I had a similar problem on a new M&P9 C.  The rounds stopped as they came up the feed ramp.  I used a little MOTHER'S Chrome and Rim polish on a Qtip and a soft cloth to polish the feed ramp to correct the problem.  I know it is a used pistol, but this is just a thought.

Made it back to the range today. The new spring I had was actually a 14lb not a 16lb like I had thought, so I just put the old back in. Ran about 100 rounds through the 4 magazines, no problems!!!
