Hammer spring?
« on: January 29, 2016, 01:32:10 PM »
What's the lightest hammer spring that you have installed in your P-09 for competition?  I currently have the 13# spring in mine but would like to lighten the single action weight a touch more.  Federal primers will most likely be a must in this case.  O0

I have the blue HS, which I believe is 13# and the extFP is recommended. I think Cajun's P series hammer or CZ's Comp hammer are your next options to upgrade your SA.

I also have the Cajun hammer and short reset recently installed which included the extended firing pin.  All very impressive but as a steel shooter I am always looking for a 1/4# more off whenever I can.

I am running a CGW extended FP and an 11.5 lb hammer spring in my .40 cal P09.  No problems setting off any brand of primer yet. Have run through several thousand of the cheap S&B primers from Cabelas, but I do use Federal in matches just in case. My press has adjustable primer seating depth and I seat them very deep with a slight pre-crush, that's probably how I can get away with it. Double action trigger pull is probably between 5 and 6 lbs.

So here is a rundown of what I have done to my P09 for reference.....

97060 - X Heavy Stainless guide rod
97910 - Double action spring kit (Only am currently using the firing pin block plunger spring)
15# flat wire recoil spring
92050 - Competition Grade All Steel Sight Set P-07/09 Series
97032 - Extended Magazine Release For P-07/09 (rounded the sharp top edge to keep from digging into my hand)
91000 - P Series Hammer
92030 - Short Reset Kit
HS-12000 "Black" 11.5# Hammer Spring

I loaded a small amount of rounds to see if the 11.5# hammer spring would fire CCI primers or Federal primers that were both loaded on a Square Deal B Dillon press.  Double action, on my cheap gauge, was under 7#'s and single was a consistent 2#'s.  3 test rounds were fired in double-action and 3 rounds were fired in single action of each primer.  All 12 rounds fired without issue.  I will be loading 50 rounds today with CCI primers to test tomorrow for consistency under competition speed conditions.  I will also have access to a Lyman digital gauge to get actual trigger pull numbers to share.  At this point I am extremely happy with how the P09 is set-up for the coming season.

When folks start down that road of lightening springs to reduce trigger pull, does anyone polish the sides of the hammer, the sear, any part that turns in relation to the frame?

Does anyone use special lubricants (like the ones using Teflon in a light oil carrier)?

I can remember working on my S&W 586.  Not only did I adjust the springs but I also polished the sides of the hammer and trigger (where you couldn't see them) and the small rectangular piece (been a long time but I think it was called a rebound slide??  I remember it had a spring in it and was down near the bottom of the frame - it was over 35 years ago) in the frame.

I mean, if you reduce the spring power then reducing internal friction should help the reduced power springs still do their job - easier/faster.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

60 rounds downrange today all loaded with CCI primers.  20 DA trigger pulls with no failures to fire then 40 SA with 1 failure to fire during rapid fire shooting.  Overall I am happy and the one round that didn't ignite from SA did fire from the DA pull that followed.  I call this a success although I will most likely stick to Federal primers for competition and CCI for practice.
