Is the FDE going to be injection molded tan plastic? Or painted black plastic?

I assume it's FDE plastic all the way through, but that means reinjecting the stock, the grip, etc. Seems like a lot of work. Not to mention black being slightly stronger, and slightly lighter.

I did injection molding operation and supervision for many years.

Using different color polymer in a injection molding operation isn't very much work at all. Flush the black from the hopper, swap your feed to the new color, run the nozzle until you get a steady fill of the new color, make minor adjustments for temp and set time. Takes about 10 minutes.

Except that non-black colors are heavier and weaker. There are often times design changes are needed for parts that will come in different colors. For example, the weight difference in a Green TRG stock is almost 1/2lb heavier than the Black TRG stock.

Magpul using no pigment at all in their "sand" mags is genius!

The sand mags make a good starting point to die also. There's some good examples of bakelite and plum starting from the sand or tan furniture. Not that I'd want a plum or bakelite evo but still.

Figures. I spend a few months considering it, socking some money away, always one sitting there at the local Cabelas. And when I finally decide to pull the trigger, they're suddenly the rarest gun in the nation. My luck in a nutshell.

So much for that pre-election SBR.

Can you expand on this? I've heard Magpul say things like this, and seen numerous reports of their Foliage and FDE items being weaker, but I don't understand why. What exactly is it about the black that makes it stronger, or lighter colors weaker?

Sure. It's the dye. You have to add a little dye to get black. You have to add a lot of dye to get a consistent not-black. Dye has no stength and it's heavy.

Magpul's sand mag is genius because it's just the natural color of their plastic now, and dying them only adds a layer outside, not all the way through.

I know it doesn't seem a like a big deal, but it makes a huge difference.
