*sigh*...oh well....
« on: March 20, 2016, 05:02:36 PM »
I knew I shoulda stayed home. Probably because I had to get up at 7AM to make the time...and I didn't get home from work until almost 2AM. But no...I made a promise to a buddy and to my wife, meet him before she gets up so the rest of the day is hers and hers alone.
So there I was out to the range with the always faithful Scorpion and the 100 year old Mauser - I grabbed at random, almost. Cuppa coffee and a Michalena's microwave meal in the belly, ready to shoot. Met my buddy, exchanged our usual gifts, and I set Thugly and the paper target out at 100 yards, expecting good things. I shoulda known...
Lets start by saying the U shaped Thug stand was so shot up by my misses that I left it there, in the dumpster. Good thing LAGS makes them for me five at a time. The paper target? Well, I'll let it speak for itself.

That was the BEST group of the entire trip, shot, not even standing but SEATED, braced, Scorpion at 100 yards, cheek rested! I should have tied my bandanna Western bandit style across my face so no one would know me. After 100 rounds of me slowly grabbing a clue that this was not my morning, I switched to the Mauser. That took even less time to tell me painfully and loadly that I should have stayed in bed.
The only bright spot was when I got to the range, I realized I had forgotten my stool, laughed about it to LAGS, and out of NOWHERE comes this big blond guy, with a blue plastic folding stool he just hand me! I was stunned. I said thank you and used it. His name is Pete and he moved to this neck of the woods just a few years ago, hope he sticks around - Thanks Pete! I dusted it off when I gave it back to him. :) Another nice thing - the young man with his girlfriend and teaching her to shoot his AR-15...not one Tommy Tactical move, and she went from prone at 25 yards to standing at 100 yards hitting a steel gong. Well done! Sometimes I think maybe all ISN'T lost with the youth of America. Matter of fact, a lot of good wholesome looking young people were showing up when my bleary eyed fat old carcass was rolling back out in disgrace. :) Always a good sign.
Maybe it wasn't such a bad trip after all.  ;)

AM--Another great story from the range.  The young people who are early risers are probably more responsible than the late risers?  Glad you got to observe some early risers.

As for having a bad shooting experience, that happened to me last week when I rushed to the range to try the 75B with a just-mounted red dot.  I couldn't shoot the P-09 well at all, and I know it was me.  I was rushed and it was unusual for me to go that close to dark.  Nothing was "normal" and I shot the 75B better than the P-09.  That was a first.

One can make progress on a "bad" day, and learn something.  It just isn't what one expected when one rushed out the door.  Even the frustrating days are educational, therefore not really bad.

Too bad about the Thugly hanger.  Such is life.

Nice read.

To paraphrase a famous lyricist;
"The youth are our future
Teach them well and let them lead their way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier..."

Someday some one will collect my range stories and publish them as cheap jack sage advice for quacks. :D

Still sounds better than my day. Got up at 0530 and drove 6 hours to home and freedom. (Yeah I was in California  ;D) Got home and just sat down at 1830 after getting "ready" for the week.

Some days at the Range will be better than others.  It's really nice when we help each other at the Range!

You had good intentions though, and it is important to practice our shooting!

What ammo were you using? I find the 147gr works best for longer ranges. at 50 yards I can keep them in a 3" circle from a rest. At 100 I can ring 10" steel standing unsupported every time. Next time out I will try paper at 100.

124 gr Lee TL bullet home cast, powdercoated, 6.4gr AA#7, a light general purpose load I think might be too light for the Scorpion.
