OD Green SP-01 Tactical is Home!!
« on: May 15, 2016, 05:04:45 PM »
Well Guys, here it is.

First impressions are that this thing is, as you all know, very solid and well made.  I have the 75B in OD Green, a P-09 in FDE and a P-07.

I almost regretted buying this for a week or two after I ordered it because it is so similar to my 75B.  I usually like to try something a little different than what I already have but have just read and seen too much positive feedback about this gun.  Also, I wanted the rail, I wanted the night sights, I wanted the decocker and I couldn't pass up the extended barrel.  Plus, I really like the OD Green color.

Right out of the box, I'm really impressed with the trigger.  The double action is very smooth, no grittiness and lighter than my P-series guns without any work.  The single action has a bit of take up and a nice clean break.  I brought it home, disassembled it and wiped out all of the grease, then lubed it to my liking.  Maybe it's because this was a special run, but the trigger is the smoothest I've gotten out of a CZ out of the box.  I'm not complaining about the rest of my CZ family, I'm just that impressed with this one.  The trigger bar and all of the internals seem surprisingly free of machining marks.  I expect to see some but this thing looks great. I checked the grip screws and they feel like they have a little blue Loctite on them so I left them alone.

It feels and sounds just like my 75B when you rack it.  I know that sounds funny, but they do have a distinctive sound.  The decocker is different than the P-series, but is very distinct/crisp and works well.  It's a little stiff but I'm sure that will loosen and smooth up in time.  Magazines drop free.  Also, the three 16 rounders I have for my 75B will work in this gun.  I'll be buying three more extended mag bases in the near future.

The recoil spring/slide is stiff.  When reassembling, you have to compress the recoil spring about 1/2" before the slide stop holes line up.  I suppose this is a trait of the non-captured recoil spring but I will be ordering a lighter spring for it.

The sights are the taller tritium sights to clear a suppressor (which I'll never have in Illinois....)  Interesting, the sight picture on this gun is sharper than on my P-series guns.  Held at arms length, in shooting position, the front sight just fills the notch in the rear sight so no 'centering' of the front sight blade is needed.  I think I like that.

Normally, I like to punch a little paper when I first get a gun to see where it shoots for me.  We had a wedding to go to yesterday so I didn't have time.

I did have time to fire off ten rounds though, and while this isn't a 'range report', I have to say I'm impressed.

I have two steel targets 50 yards off my deck.  One is a silhouette, 12" X 20".  On a my best day with my P-09, I've hit it 13 out of 18 times off hand, unsupported.

The FIRST ten shots out of this gun yielded 8 hits.  I was shooting American Eagle, 115 grain, my new favorite ammo!

When I walked back in, my wife said, "So, do you have a new favorite?"  I answered that I think I do!  It makes me feel bad for my beloved P-09!

So, yesterday afternoon, I field stripped and cleaned my trusty ole P-09 and locked her away...for now.  I just don't like to have too many guns loose in the house just in case we have visitors while we're away.  Not probable but always possible.

I don't think I've left anything out for now.  I'm sure I'll return to gush after I've had a little more trigger time.

In closing, I think it's only fair to admit one disappointment with the gun.

I'm an engineer and a chronic tinkerer.  I just have to mess with things to make them better.  I can't think of a single thing I would do with this gun other than lighten the recoil spring and shoot the heck out of it....maybe an extended firing pin so I can lighten the hammer spring.

For now though, I'll just break it in.

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

ODG is a great choice for the color. Nice pistol you got there. I'll keep my fingers crossed that one day you'll be able to suppress that bad boy.

That gun looks great!  Love the OD color and considered it myself for a min before I grabbed the SP-01.

What part of IL are you in?  I'm right across in IN, but travel around IL a lot.

This gun does not cease to impress me.  They must have done some extra polishing at the factory since these were a special run.  I've not put a full box through this gun yet, but I can consistently put 8 out of 10 on the 12" X 20" silhouette at 50 yards, unsupported if I do my part.

That is better than I shoot my modified P-09 and it's not even broken in yet.

The only thing I've changed is the swap out for a 13 lb recoil spring.

Do you think that the taller sights help in the shooting?

I don't know that they help, but I think that the width of the notch in the rear is smaller.  The front sight blade just fills the notch in the rear when viewed at arms length.
It gives a sharper sight picture.  With my P-09, there is a small gap on either side of the rear notch relative to the front blade, that you have to keep centered when shooting.

I have a couple of Ruger MK II's that I love.  On one of them, I've filed the front sight blade to half it's original width and made a new rear blade insert out of an old sawzall blade.  I made the rear notch narrower to compensate, which gives a 'crisper' sight picture.

I've shot blackbirds at 50 yards with that gun, resting on the window sill in my bedroom.  There was some luck involved but the tighter sight picture definitely makes a difference.

It think that might have something to do with it.

I need to compare these to my P-09 but I think the tritium inserts are brighter too.
