Tactical Sport 40 to 9
« on: July 24, 2014, 09:55:44 PM »
Can the CZ75 Tactical Sport .40 S&W be converted to 9mm? (If so, what does it take - replace barrel, need full upper, go spend another 1200 for another gun...?)
This has probably been asked a million times, but I only found 2 hits that really related to the question when I searched, but were from several years ago:  1) Ask STUART and 2) check out EFK (which doesn't sell conversion barrels for CZ TS anymore)
Maybe I'm just not entering search words correctly. (My wife doesn't understand me either)
Can anyone help me out. I sent email (2 months ago) and left voice mail (several days ago) for CZ Custom, figuring they were the best chance of being able to do this, but never got a response.

You should contact Stuart at CZ Custom.  I bought a 9mm TS slide from them for a little under $700 to slowly build CTS LS-B SAO.

Sorry we did not answer

Couple of ways you probably can go.
buy a whole top end and have it fitted to your frame. this will give you two top ends.  New top end is about $498.
the other way, but I cant guarentee a thing with this way. Have a 9mm barrel fitted to your slide. Reason we cant guarentee it will work is not sure if there would be consistent and reliable extraction and ejection due to dimensional and tolerance differences breechface and cartridge head.

There are people on the Brian Enos forum that say a fitted 9 mm barrel works reliably.

Thanks to all who replied - and now I know who STUART is  :)
Stuart - is the top end listed on czcustom.com? I couldn't find it - was looking at: http://czcustom.com/CZ-TS-Parts.aspx

It might not be. I'll check to see if we have any that are not oversize and will require fitting.

I 100% realize the original post is from a couple years ago.  However I do have the same question as the original poster.  I'm hoping either he or Stuart (or anybody that has tried this) can respond.

Did you ever go through with this and get it to work?

What does it mean to have a barrel "fitted" to your slide?  I'm unfamiliar with that.  (I'm not new to firearms. I've even done a few barrel changes and set headspace on rifles).

Growing up in the country, my dad had me shooting since I was a little guy.  In more recent years, I've shot a few IDPA style local matches.  I wanted to get into USPSA style shooting so I just purchased a CZ 75 TS in 9mm, NOT realizing that it's almost useless in all shooting sports.  I should have purchased it in .40 obviously.

I'm curious if I can solve this problem by purchasing another barrel and magazines?

Or does anyone have knowledge on sanctioned shooting events where a person could even use a 9mm CZ 75 TS effectively?  Thanks!  I really appreciate anyone's opinions and responses to this.  I've been shooting and reloading for years.  However this was going to be my first efforts towards actually competing with pistols.

The OP hasn't been on the forum for two years so I doubt you'll hear from him. Stuart is still around.  ;)

3-gun, steel challenge, or USPSA Limited Division (just shoot all A's! ;) )

Seriously, just shoot Limited Minor in USPSA.  You've got terrific round capacity, and if you're just getting into shooting competitively you will spend more time getting used to how to run a course of fire and being safe than anything else.  There are several shooters at our club who shoot Limited Minor with a 9mm.  A guy who shows up with a M&P actually does quite well.

When you get a few matches under your belt, then get a .40 Upper and mags.  The 9mm is much cheaper to feed, anyway.

You cannot convert a 9 mm TS to .40 with a barrel change.  Breechface has different dimension.  You would need a new upper.  Second the rec. for limited minor.  Lots of fun.

Thanks!  Yeah, I'm just thinking ahead.  I haven't fired the TS yet so it's brand new.  If I couldn't make a .40 barrel and mags work with it, I was half way thinking of trying to trade it back in while it was still new.

I'm a little surprised that CZ even offers the Tactical Sport in 9mm.  Right on their website they market it as a USPSA Limited pistol.  After more time spent reading, saying USPSA Limited is almost synonymous with the .40 S&W cartridge.

I am planning on going to a local Steel Challenge next month.  I shoot a lot of my own steel targets but have never been to a Steel Challenge event yet.  I'm looking forward to it!

I would just second (or third) the motion that Limited Minor is not really a limiting factor. The recoil management on a 9 vs a 40 makes that TS 9mm a beast for your follow-up shots.

There are many shooters in USPSA that shoot Minor and are rated quite highly - the speed and accuracy pays dividends.

I would not write it off too quickly, as it usually takes quite some time before any of us can be certain it is the gun that is holding us back!
