Need a thread protector!
« on: June 23, 2016, 10:23:20 AM »
I bought a second-hand CZ 527 in .222 Rem. that once had a suppressor on it. i'm trying to find a thread protector to screw on the end of the barrel.

I can't find any info on the thread pitch. is it the USA standard 1/2 x 28? Or something Euro?

Also, the iron sights have been removed. Where could i get replacements (doesn't have to be CZ original)?

Any guidance appreciated.

The earlier rimfires were 1/2x20. Not sure if the 527's were the same.

New England Custom Gun offers some CZ sights.

Thanks, but i tried a 1/2 x 20 nut and it was too coarse. I may have to gamble and buy a 1/2 x 28.

Are you sure it was threaded at the factory?

Good question. It appears to be, but the rifle is from Europe or Britain--second hand through a broker. Apparently, it had a suppressor on it for varmint control, something i think is required in some Euro countries.

I can't find a local gun shop that carries thread protectors to try one on. I might take it in for them to try to screw a 1/2 x 28 compensator on. But it's a hassle. i may call around to some industrial fastener outlets to see if i can find a 1/2x28 (or metric equivalent) nut to try.

Ha. It just bugs me to have those naked threads out there. I guess a few wraps of electrical tape would do it.

Wahoo1 again

Try an AR15 flash suppressor, if it goes on the thread pitch will be 1/2-28. You could always just put a muzzle device for an AR on the rifle if you can't find a thread protector.

I got a nut from a fastening place that is allegedly 1/2x28, I guess it's what they use for some electrical connections and attaching switches to car dashboards. (?)

But it doesn't seem to fit either! it catches a couple threads, then stops. I'm hesitant to force it.

I'm wondering if it's metric.

if I get time tomorrow, i'll run by the local gun store and see if a AR flash suppressor fits.

I've emailed a couple vendors of after market CZ parts, but no one seems to be able to help me.

Do you know anyone with a thread gauge?

Most hardware stores have them near the nut and bolt assortments. Maybe they'd let you take it out to your car to check the thread pitch. That would tell you if it was metric or SAE.

Painter's got the solution. If it is imported likely metric, aftermarket it could be anything.

If you need a metric TP try these guys, http://www.usmachinegun.com/products.php?cat=29

I don't know how the pricing compares, but a fellow shooter says they are good to go.

First, thanks everybody.

Have yet been able to find anyone with a thread gauge (weekend).

So I took it to the local gun shop and all they had was AR-15 suppressors. But the ones they had in stock are way too big.

Tried a thread protector off a Savage .308, also way too big.

I saw on Brownell's that they have a .578-28 TPI thread protector that theoretically would be in the ballpark, but i'm not going to plunk down $20 to find out.

I'll try usmachinegun.com.

I agree about the likelihood it's metric. Went to the hardware store and got two very close metric nuts (also the biggest). M12x1 and M12x1.25. Both were to small to even start the nuts.

Plan Z: I've located a gunsmith with a machine shop who says he can make a thread protector to fit.

This is only an aesthetic issue, of course. So I can take my time solving it.

Stop by an auto parts store they should have a gauge you can borrow for 2 minutes.

Or,

For the record: CZ 527 muzzle thread = 1/2x20

I bought a $5 thread pitch gauge. The thread measures 1/2x20, which appears to be a European standard for thread-on accessories.

Lots of adapters on line for 1/2x20 to a popular U.S. standard 1/2x28.

I'm going to order a thread protector this week--that will be the final test. (I could have a issue with some of the threads being bunged, but i plan on leaving it on.)

Thanks for the guidance!
