Vfr-vz handguard screw dimensions
« on: August 31, 2016, 11:04:45 PM »
Hi all,

Having cleaned my VZ with fab defense vfr-vz handguard TWICE, the screws holding the clamshell of the handguard are already stripping out. Not sure which replacement screws to get... Does anyone know the thread pitch of these? They are 3mm Allen key screws.

good hardware stores used to have a test panel available with attached nuts and bolts of all possible (..well..  MOST)  thread sizes and pitches for customers to try and match to what they need
if you have a good hardware store in your area - bring one of the screws with ya before completely stripped..

if it's something weird like a handguard screw on a vepr you might be "screwed"

I tend to overtighten screws, but have been careful with the fab quad rail, using blue locktight when I clean.  Screws stripped out on my B&T quadrail at the trunion on a different vz58 and B&T USA compensated me after a lot of discussion and time.

I would contact FAB and ask for replacement screws or find you local True Value hardware store, who have a large stock of fasteners.  Don't strip out your threads on the rail.

On the captive gas rod rifles I don't clean the gas system unless I have shot over 250 to 500 rounds. IMO, you could probably go well over 1000 rounds before cleaning depending on how dirty the ammo is.   YMMV

The post above is opinion, and I am probably totally wrong, so please pardon me if I offend anyone in any way. I am speaking only for myself and just sharing my thoughts, not trying to start an argument with anyone, and if you disagree with anything I have said, I concede your correct.

It's actually the head of the screws that started stripping - and I used a torque wrench too... I typically take the handguard off every few hundred rounds too, no need to do it more than that.

That's the one part of the Kalashnikov system I've always envied - operating rod comes out along with the BCG... Oh well. Will contact FAB, but not too much hope there. Will check the local Lowes and try to match the screws.
