milling 97 slide for a red dot sight
« on: October 02, 2016, 11:19:20 AM »
I've searched everywhere in this forum and others but haven't found any one who has done so on a 97 (only found on 75 and P series). Can it be done? My old eyes needs it and I want it milled not dovetailed.

Yes. Dovetail depth is about as deep as you can go without milling into firing pin block recess.

I wonder if the firing pin block can be removed or shortened so that slide can be milled deeper.

Not worth removing to get the optic a measly ~.020-.030" or so deeper IMO. Dovetail depth alone is close to .100" deep if I remember correctly off the top my head. The angle of that picture doesn't show how deep it's really in there.

Found this other thread in the forum for a red dot mounted CZ75. It looks gorgeous. Since I don't have a 75 to compare (nor do I have gotten my 97 yet), I wonder if the same can be made on a 97B.

That's a Shadow - no FPB. Can be milled much much lower than a 97 could due to not having to worry about milling into FPB recess.

Hmm... in this case I'd rather having the FPB removed on my 97B to drill lower if it can be done like that Shadow.

Your gun, your choice. It can be done.

I have cautioned folks on milling the 97 for an optic.  While it can be done, the slide on the 97 is quite narrow at the top.  This means a deep cut is needed to get sufficient width to accommodate the mounting screws on the optic.

The mount works very well and skirts this issue.  Another alternative is a frame mount.
