Do you really need a muzzle device?
« on: October 16, 2016, 07:11:35 PM »
I have a Scorpion pistol (waiting on a tax stamp) that has a Kaw Valley linear comp and a Carbine with muzzle brake.   After about 500 rounds at the range it had significant lead build up in the brake.  Lead had built up to point of touching the exiting bullet.  I did not see an effect on accuracy.  I was running drills under 20 yards.    The barrel did not have any lead.  I am running SNS 125Gr NLG RN with 3.8Gr of titgroup at 1.090 OAL.   I have not chronod that load out of the carbine yet.  Out of my SP-01 its 1070 and the Scorpion pistol 1150.

The Kaw Valley on the pistol after 500 rounds had very little carbon or lead build.  Couple of very small flakes that easily picked off.

I shoot a lot and do not want to have to clean a muzzle brake every couple of 100 rounds.  I am thinking of either going with the Kaw Valley or just putting on a thread protector.   I leaning toward the thread protector.

Thoughts?

Its 9mm so not much of a blast.  You are fine with just the thread protector on.
No real blow back or muzzle climb.
If you own a drill press, you can turn most any 1/2x28 223 break into a 9mm with a 27/64 drill bit....
Damage industries is having a 1/2 off sale right now.

Yes, I needed one from Manticore to funnel the blast away from my laser light. I hate my light getting covered in grey-ish soot.

Depends on what muzzle device you are talking about.

I love my Tirant 9 muzzle device.  It will never leave the end of my Scorpion. ;D

I dropped my Scorpion Carbine off at the local gunsmith to get the chamber reamed.  The chamber is tighter than my SP-01 and Scorpion pistol.  I am also having the gunsmith remove the muzzle break and replace with a thread protector.  On the 16inch version of the Scorpion I do not see a reason to have a muzzle device other than Wraith223 said to direct gas away from gear on the front of the rifle.  There is also looks if you care about that sort of thing   8)

The Pistol/SBR having a muzzle device like a linear comp is a good idea.  I did not like the the way gas came off the OEM flash hider.
