polishing the controls?
« on: January 07, 2017, 07:33:04 PM »
So I polished the barrel on my sp-01 Tactical for looks and it looks really nice. Added bling to the port and barrel tip. I was wondering if anyone has ever did that to the controls. Levers, pins and such. Ive seen handguns that have plated controls and I thought maybe just take off the polycoat and really shine them up. Is there any drawback to doing this? Just wondering. Thank you for any feedback

Rust but it you polish them high enough and keep the gun cleaned I don't think it would really be a issue. Another option would be to replace the pins, and slide stop with stainless parts before you polish them.

I've thought about doing this also. As ThompsonCustom pointed out, I was concerned about rust from sweat, etc.
   Interested in what others say.

I think if I keep it well oiled and clean after every outing it should be ok

I purchased a used Rami that had the hammer, trigger, slide stop and decocker lever polished.  I replaced the hammer with a comp hammer but the other controls are still on the gun.  I don't have any rust issues and yes you can get a high polish on the stock parts.  I'm not really a fan of the polished look but that was the only Rami BD I found (when I was looking).  My biggest issue is the slide stop is too slippery and I can't actuate it as easily.  The polishing rounded off the serrations and made the already small slide stop more difficult to use.

You can see them in my Rami Action Upgrade Videos:

Use a very fine file and cut  new serrations.
Or you can use a brand new polishing Stone in a Dremel or a cutting disc and carefully Cut new serrations.

I have polished, to a mirror finish, both the hammer and the trigger. This degree of polishing closes the metal surface which helps in reducing the occurance of rusting. Periodic oiling is still necessary however. As was mentioned think twice about the safety due to slipperiness. I have seen videos where the detailer has polished the trigger pin. If you can detect the change in trigger pull, from unpolished to polished, the force is truly with you. It does give the pistol a "special" look and you customized it

I've rusted guns purposely as a finish on them....used gun oil to stop the rusting process, I can say with 100% certainty that as long as you periodically clean and lightly oil up the bare metal you will be fine, climate conditions are a major factor as to how often they need attention.  There are a lot of guns in the world with bare metal exposed to the elements that don't rust...why? they get maintained.  On the other hand, there are guns that have their bluing or other finish intact that do rust....why? they DON'T get maintained.  Worst case if you decide later you want them "refinished" its easy enough to do.

FWIW:  I polished the tip of the bbl and the exposed portion of the bbl in the ejection port on my 75B many years ago.
I use oil (Mobile 1 😉) to lube everything. except the Inside of the bbl.    No rust or corrosion can be found.

I wouldn't polish the slide release on the chance my short fingers might slip off IF I need to use it,  which not very often.  I never use the safety other than an ops check after cleaning.  If I holtered cocked and locked,  I wouldn't advise polishing the safety.
