New to IDPA

So, I finally decided to give competition a try. I haven't yet shot a match but I'm going to a 2 day intro class with some instructions time and then a live fire session. I'm thinking of shooting with my SP-01 Shadow and wondering what type of holster you would suggest. Perhaps something not too expensive as I don't know if this is something I'll be getting into.

Also, I'm trying to understand the concept of a cover garment. What's most practical to use and allowed? It seems from what I have read it needs to prevent all equipment to be seen from the front, back and sides.

You can get by with just about anything and it will work but better equipment will let you compete better and have more fun. 

Comp-Tac and Blade Tec are very popular kydex holsters. It is easier to draw and reholster with kydex.

I wear either an open shirt or a vest. Vest gets hot in the summer but it sweeps out of the way faster and cleaner. Yes the concealment garment must hide all your equipment from view and when you raise your arms parallel to the ground.

Some people compete with an in the waistband holster covered by a T shirt and they do well also.

Be sure to give USPSA a try as well. Scoring is bizarre, but not as rule-dense. I score better at IDPA, but enjoy USPSA far more...

Yes, I plan to do so as well. I don't know quite yet if competition is my thing, but I definitely want to try at least to force me being a better shooter, and for the fun of it.

FYI You cannot have drop and/or offset holster in IDPA
