Scorpion Carbine Speer Gold Dot 124 +P Reliability Test
« on: January 20, 2018, 03:50:01 PM »
This is a duplicate of my January 07 test with 9BPLE +P+ except I'm using

Speer Gold Dot 124 +P ammo this time

I fired 40 rounds of Gold Dot 124 +P in this configuration at our outdoor range today.

5 rounds properly shouldered
5 rounds very lightly shouldered
5 rounds away from the shoulder
5 rounds away from the shoulder and turned 90 degrees right
5 rounds away from the shoulder and turned 90 degrees left
5 rounds away from the shoulder and turned 180 degrees up side down
10 rounds rapid fire

There were ZERO issues. I REALLY think this firearm would do well as a self defense weapon.

The only modifications I've made to my Scorpion that would effect functioning are

HBI Spring Kit
HBI poly charging handle
Manticore 32 round clear magazine
Taylor Freelance 10 round extension
Taylor Freelance Wolff spring for GLOCK 41+1 kit

My Scorpion Carbine was purchased in April, 2017 from grabagun.com. There is a "17" on the bolt. The S/N is C223xxx

The receiver mold seems to be the latest version that I've seen posted on this forum.

I haven't done any parts or feed ramp polishing or modifications to assist in feeding hollow points.

The empty brass cases ejected about 15 feet away.

Love these. Appreciate this sort of testing.

Between the two which is your preferred S/D load?

I so wished I had of brought some of the 9BPLE +P+ today, because I "think" the recoil was less.

I plan on doing some side by side testing of these 2 rounds in the future just for control ability.

Chronographing would provide some great info too. Supposedly the 9BPLE +P+ is right at 1,600 fps

My Scorpion has been a great experience.

Thanks for the testing on this.  I followed your previous post on Fed BP9LE +P+ and got some coming from SGAmmo.

I also found out the culprit of my EVO feeding issue - It is a 1st gen gun and the barrel/feed ramp has a ledge that caused the JHP bullet to hang up (cartridge is Hornady Critical Defense JHP).  This occurs on both side of magazine feeding stack:

I checked this against my 16" EVO carbine, which is a 2nd gen gun and this ledge doesn't exist.  CZ used a different feed ramp design to fill in all the steps/gaps at the ramp-to-barrel mating surfaces.  That explained why my carbine runs fine with JHP, even with truncated bullets in my handloads of 124 gr Precision Delta JHP without much crimping.

Will see if the FED BP9LE would feed in my 1st gen Scorpion.

I'm pulling the barrel out of the shell to do some 'massaging' of the feed ramp/barrel edges and then polish her up.  Will report back on results.

ETA - Barrel had been pulled out and deburred/polished.  I wanted to open up the feed ramp/barrel and do a little blending but that would change the feed angle so decided against doing it.  Pix of before and after:

Before deburring - Markings where the copper jacket of the JHP slammed against the barrel edge could be seen on both sides of the feed stack:

After deburring/polishing - Wish I could fill in the gaps between barrel and feed ramp! Wonder if JB Weld would survive in this hostile environment???

Hand cycling is now successful in feeding Hornady Critical Defense albeit still have some visible bullet tip damages:

Need some live fire testing but not today...it is snowing like a sumbitch right now  >:(

Can you post a pix of it? From the loading port would be ok.  Thanks!
