still confused on prism red dot (and sling)
« on: January 22, 2018, 04:51:20 PM »
I've read the posts I could find regarding a red dot for my scorpion carbine.  But I'm still confused.  I bought the 1X spitfire since it had so many great reviews (and both hubby and I have astigmatism).  But we don't really like the reticle at all.  the dot is so tiny and the 2nd circle is actually distracting in our opinions.

so now i'm stumped!  i don't know if we should try the Burris 1X AR prism, which looks like it has a "better" reticle?  Or attempt another real red dot (i.e. maybe venom or razor?)  I do have a viper on my buck mark and haven't noticed a tail/odd shaped dot.  But with both the Vortex Sparc AR and TRS we get the tail.

HELP!

also, i see that the savvy sniper sling seems to be popular... which one, exactly?  there are several listed on their site.

thanx!

Girls just gotta have guns and ammo.... LOTS of ammo!

The 1x spitfire dot size is 3 moa, which is large by most standard. Not sure what you're looking for in a reticle because there are no other 1x glass etched reticle out there besides the old Leupold Prismatic with a cross hair and 3 moa dot (Leupold no longer makes this).  Don't even bother with the Burris AR1X, its reticle is way too clutter with the center dot being 4.4 moa and substension lines, looked good on paper but when view at 1x, all the lines tend to clump together.  Most shooter already gotten rid of this faux pas after the first few months on the market (Burris promised a new reticle based on gunners' input but it has been 2 years!)

Sling wise, stick with the well known brand like Blue Force Gear, VTac, or Magpul.  For the Scorpion EVO, the two factory sling points are ring type and you need hk-style hook sling ends.  Most useful is 2-point slings with quick length adjustment like 3 named before.

I have astigmatism too and I felt the same about the 1x reticle after watching every Spitfire video on youtube.  In the process of viewing them, I saw a few through the eyepiece comparisons of the 1x and the 3x. I purchased the 3x. http://www.czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=93886.0

I've had it to the range three times now. I love that 3x reticle. It's better (for me) than I could reasonably expect from any optic. The one objection I expected to find with the 3x was close up/HD distance distortion. I've had no issues focusing inside my home. Honestly, any HD fire is more likely to be of point and pull nature rather than lengthy controlled breathing/aim/squeeze trigger work.

I recommend contacting Vortex. They very well may trade you out.
Although I once owned a couple, I don't really have a SIGnature.

I agree w you on the Vortex 3x reticle, more useful, even at close up distance, one can learn to shoot on the fly with just an illuminated dot imposing on somewhat fuzzy target.  This is an old trick I learned a long time ago with ACOG TA11 (3.5x).

The only reasons to choose 1x for me:

1) Compete in the non-magnified optic/iron sight division (in both USPSA and outlaw 3 gun matches).
2) Be able to focus the dot to a very precise dot without the star burst (I do have astigmatism too).  With this precise dot, I can use its size to measure hold over at targets beyond zeroed range, no way to do that for me with a typical RDS like Aimpoint or Burris FF2/3.

It is too bad Leupold discontinued the Prismatic line.  Its design wasn't optical by any means (illumination sux) but its glass was very good as one would expect from Leupold.
