cleaning question, but unsure of correct term
« on: February 17, 2018, 05:23:55 PM »
I have an SP-01 Tactical in 9mm and was getting a little frustrated today. I was trying to clean the area where the firing pin pokes through metal, perhaps called the "breech face" of the gun?, but when it is just part of the slide it is very difficult to get good access for a thorough cleaning.

How does one clean/access/disassemble this area for a proper cleaning?

Check out one of the disassembly videos/tutorials - it's pretty easy.

Musashi:
- In all forms of strategy, it is necessary to maintain the combat stance in everyday life and to make your everyday stance your combat stance. (situational awareness).
- You can only fight the way you practice.
- If you do not control the enemy, the enemy will control you.

Quick way?  Remove the slide from the frame, remove the barrel/recoil spring/guide.

Put on some safety glasses.  Get a can of brake cleaner, stick the little clear tube in the nozzle, make sure you're outside, spray the brake cleaner into the firing pin hole.  Spray, look at the crud coming out, spray some more.  When the crud stops flowing out it's pretty clean inside.

Then you've got to get some lube/oil back in there on the metal surfaces to keep stuff from rusting.  I use Rem-oil for that but once I'm satisfied the rem-oil is on the metal surfaces inside I use my regular lube for lubrication.

If you want to tear it apart and inspect the parts, watch those videos.  The more times you do it, the easier it becomes.

If you're going to tear it down, might as well get a new firing pin retaining pin from Cajun Gun Works to replace the original.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

I shoot Hornady One Shot gun cleaner in there.  Flushes crap out and leaves a dry lube. YMMV.

That should work.  The idea is to break crud loose and flush it out of the tight areas it's hard to reach/clean.  I think I started using carb/brake cleaner dealing with those nasty AR15's.  Even carb/brake cleaner won't get rid of all the crud, but it gets rid of a lot of it.

I use silicone spray after the brake cleaner.  Just use the straw and as M1 pointed out wear safety glasses, spray till running out the hammer end.  Silicone will also leave a dry slick film.  I don't clean the firing pin channel every cleaning.  Maybe every 500-1000 rounds depending on how clean they shoot.

And yes, that is the breech face.

Cheers,
Toby

I have Break-Free "Powder Blast". Is that similar enough, and could I use that in place of the Hornady One Shot?
Or what about Break-Free CLP. Would that work, also?
Thank you for all of the responses. I def. am not taking it apart....I'd lose all the pins and springs.
Very clumsy with stuff like that.
