Firing pin retaining pin part breakage sp01
« on: February 19, 2018, 01:27:07 PM »
I went to wipe down my SP01 and saw the firing pin was stuck in an extreme forward position

Slide dissaembly showed that my firing pin retaining pin had broken a chunk off and also cracked.

I have a Cajun extended firing pin and this was the Cajun retaining pin installed as directed with the open "notch" at 12 o clock

Gun has maybe 2000 rounds and is 3 months old. Fair amount of dry firing done.

This is my first CZ so im not sure what to expect maintenance wise.

Is this a normal amount of wear and tear, did I do something wrong ?

Would this have caused the gun to "run away" and fire an entire magazine?

I feel like this could have resulted in a bad mishap.

Call CGW and let them know about the pictures.  I'm sure they will make it right. FWIW I always use an o-ring when dry firing.

I ordered the replacement already, just want to make sure I didn't screw something up for next time. And hopefully learn a the service interval or inspection for this part. I figured the slide stop would be the first to go

If you are doing extensive dry firing you should be using snap caps or an O ring under the hammer to cushion the firing pin. As far as the gun running away that's not likely. The incoming round slides up the breach face so it would have jammed on the protruding firing pin and stopped.

Thanks both of you for the o ring tip

One more o-ring tip - red silicone o-rings are much easier to see when you leave them in your pistol than the black o-rings

If you dry fire, you need o-rings or some other form to cushion the firing pin impact as mentioned above.  I would inspect it at minimum annually or every 2000 rounds in your case.  O-rings will extended the life of the retaining pin significantly.

The spring steel retaining pin is deliberately the weak link to minimize damage to the firing pin and associated firing pin channel.  I would consider this a normal wear and tear item.  I have them in my spares and will replace them if I see signs of fatigue.  It's an inexpensive part but critical to the function so keep an eye on it when you are detail cleaning/inspecting.

Cheers,
Toby
