Shipping Evo for Gunsmith Work
« on: February 23, 2018, 05:28:41 PM »
I know a fair few of you here have shipped your Evos to Buhler Ballistics for work; how exactly did you ship your gun?

I've received firearms from FedEx before (CMP Garand), but I've never had to send one of mine out so I'm not sure if I can just drop it off at a FedEx store or UPS store and go from there. Are there any special procedures or shipment methods that need to be used?

Log on to the website for FedEx or UPS. You can only shop a firearm from specific hubs

I thought that's how UPS and FedEx did it; I'll probably check with the local stores too just to see what they say.

What about USPS? I know they have specifications about shipping rifles unloaded, but I don't know if they have any special regulations for shipping a registered SBR (even if the "SB" part hasn't been done yet). I'd assume it's the same process as shipping a rifle, but the regulations I saw specified 16" barrel or longer. It's currently in carbine configuration so it meets those standards, but I'd rather dodge any legal confusion up front.

If you have a local FFL check with them. A dealer that I?ve bought from told me he?d ship USPS using his license. Can?t remember what he quoted me, but was a lot cheaper than Fed Ex or UPS.
Being in carbine configuration, you?d have to call your local USPS office and see what they say about shipping yourself.

A rifle is a rifle. You can ship it USPS.

May a nonlicensee ship a firearm through the U.S. Postal Service?
A nonlicensee may not transfer a firearm to a non-licensed resident of another State. A nonlicensee may mail a shotgun or rifle to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. The Postal Service recommends that long guns be sent by registered mail and that no marking of any kind which would indicate the nature of the contents be placed on the outside of any parcel containing firearms. Handguns are not mailable. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun

Not quite true, unless your state prohibits it. From ATF.Gov

7. May I lawfully ship a firearm directly to an out-of-State licensee, or must I have a licensee in my State ship it to him? May the licensee return the firearm to me, even if the shipment is across State lines?

Any person may ship firearms directly to a licensee in any State, with no requirement for another licensee to ship the firearm. However, handguns are not mailable through the United States Postal Service and must be shipped via common or contract carrier.(18 U.S.C. ?? 1715).

Firearms shipped to FFLs for repair or any other lawful purpose may be returned to the person from whom received without transferring the firearm through an FFL in the recipient?s State of residence. FFLs may also return a replacement firearm of the same kind and type to the person from whom received. 18 U.S.C. ? 922(a)(2)(A).
