S&W Model 940 - The Forgotten J-Frame Centennial
« on: April 09, 2018, 11:00:54 AM »
Hi Folks! Here is a range review of a great little revolver I've had in my collection for over 20 years. If you happen across one, take a good look at it because they are not very common these days. I'm not sure why the 9mm/J-frame concept never made the transition to the airweight/airlite lines because I think the 9mm works better in the short barreled revos than a lot of other cartridges. In any case, be sure to let me know what you think of the 940 and the video!

I have a couple J frames including the 640 which is the 940's father. While the 940 is a great little gun the I never cared for using moon clips and it's a pain to eject empties without them. Who knows they may make a comeback at some point. Small wheel guns still sell like hotcakes.

I'm not surprised you haven't seen one. They were manufactured circa 1990-1998. There were not a lot of them made, although I do see them from time to time at gun shows and in used pistol cases. There was a 3" version that is even more scarce. Mine was an ankle piece back in the day when my duty pistol was a 9mm 3rd Gen S&W. It was semi-retired when I bought a similar but much lighter Model 342. I really like the 342 and I carry it to this day, but I always wished S&W would have offered a version of that revolver chambered for the 9mm.

I remember they did a very limited run in 356 TSW. It would also fire 9X19. I always thought that would be a neat one!
