replacing polymer guide rod worth it?
« on: April 18, 2018, 08:27:44 AM »
Hi,
I just bought a CZ 75B omega (pre-convertible so to speak) and there is a half guide rod made out of polymer. I fully trust the powers that be and the CZ experts and believe that polymer is just fine.

Although it just chews at me a little....what was the idea behind polymer versus all metal guide rod? Balance? Weight saving?
Is there any benefit to get a metal part? Any possible issues?

I tried to find the metal part, but didnt....

Ideas?

I find little functional difference between polymer and steel guide rods.  Haven't heard of a polymer guide rod failure yet

Yes it's worth it. For those of us who like metal only metal will do. I put metal guide rods in all my pistols, CZ and otherwise.

I guess it's worth it you want it to be.  One of my CZ's still has the polymer rod in it, and I don't know if I will replace it or not.  I have a couple of other CZ's where I did replace the rod with a metal one, but I really don't think it makes any improvement as to how the gun functions.

Those half-length guide rods seem harder to find than the full length. Is CZ customs the place to go to? Wonder if shipping of such a small part is id'd as "firearm parts" for the border services...

I do like metal more, but it's my first pistol, so I should't be picky already.....

buying a steel guide rod helps transfer excess weight from your wallet and relocate in the front of your pistol   ::)

The poly guide rod functions well  and  provides a "non-metal" to metal contact at the base where impact occurs  during the slide cycle.  With a steel guide rod,  damage sometimes occurs to the guide rod when a light recoil spring is used due to the faster/harder slide impact.
I replaced my 75B poly rod once after 40k? RDS just because I was making an order and added a new poly rod...just because.
My 75 Shadow steel G.R. with an 11# recoil spring was getting cut up on the base.  I found out here that it can happen with a light recoil spring
Went up to a 12# recoilb spring and damage seems to be stopped.
YMMV

I'm fine with plastic guide rods in my CZ's. It's light, cheap, out of sight and does it's job just fine. It's an appropriate use of plastic, unlike the plastic bell crank on the a/c blend door on a Grand Cherokee that requires the removal of the entire dashboard to replace when it breaks, and they do.
