Optics on a Scorpion Carbine - mount it high or low?
« on: September 05, 2018, 12:27:44 PM »
What have folks found to be the best - and WHY?  Mount the optic high or low?

I've got a Sig Romeo5 and if I mount it high I can still use the iron sights if needed.  But if I mount low, it doesn't co-witness and I might as well remove the sights.

If I mount high, my ear muffs are not hitting/touching the gun, low they do.

So, I figured I'd ask and see what folks have to say.

Thanks!
Some trust in chassis, Some in Horsepower, But we trust in the Lord our God.

If it goes "boom" or "vroom" I'm intersted.

Lowest possible to keep the sight offset low, meaning at 3 - 7 yds, I wouldn't have to aim over the target's head.  Also, a consistent cheek weld every time when sight is low as intended by the weapon design.

I don't use ear muff because exactly the reason you cited.  Electronic ear plugs are the way to go.

I don't use iron sight with etched reticle optic (astigmatism problem with red dot).  Since my sight is available with or without illumination, no need for BUIS.

You can see how low this 1x prismatic sight sits.

Similarly, the FastFire II is perfect for co-witness in this pistol.  It has the absolutely lowest mounting height of any RDS.

I really wanted an ultra low mount when I first started playing with the scorpion.  I finally bought a Vortex sparc2, which would Co-witness with the iron sights: I hated it. I had to push my face so low into the stock that I lost some field if view and, therefore, some situational awareness.

I installed one of the spacers to bring the sight up a bit and was a whole lot happier. True that I can't use the irons and a little bummed about that, but I think it's quite a bit better.

Same here. After attending a rifle class where the combat-experienced instructor let me borrow his rifle with an Eotech on a riser, I've been converted. I understand the concerns that people have about the optic sitting high above the barrel. But even if it's four inches over the barrel, that's not going to cause you to aim over someone's head at 10 yards. And what you gain in increased situational awareness (not to mention being and to "drop" your head down to the iron sights below your red dot) makes it a worthwhile tradeoff.

Also, if you're considering this and are confused (as I was) on how to zero the gun, get the Applied Ballistics app, go to a range that has a chrono, enter your barrel length, ballistic coefficient of the bullet you're shooting, twist rate, etc. into the app, and it will tell you your custom zero range and holdover for every yard out to 100 yards and then for every five yards out into infinity.

I had a hard time wrapping my brain around this stuff at first, so if anyone wants me to clarify (or maybe I'm the only one who didn't get it and you're all already familiar with it) just say the word.

I have my Holosun on the high mount. Was much easier to use, I tried low, it was almost as if the irons were in the way. My tall mount is the tunnel type, if my RD stops working, I just lower my gaze a bit and I'm on the irons. I think I am starting to get "device neck", meaning I look at a hand held screen too much at a lowered position and my neck starts to hurt. Was getting a little of that with the RD in the low position.

Low as possible, unlike an ar-15 with its buffer tube thats about level with the top rail , the scorpions stock steps down lowering cheek height so you can mount lower optics and get an overall more compact gun.

What optic is that?
